I have uninstalled the current madVR version by executing (as admin)
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 22\Plugins\madVR\uninstall.bat
and renaming
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 22\Plugins\madVR to madVR_0.90.20

Then I did extract the latest (0.90.24) http://madvr.com/ version at
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 22\Plugins\madVR
 and executed (as admin)
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 22\Plugins\madVR\install.bat
to install the latest version.

Next, downloaded and installed
whql-win10-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.10.1-oct13.exe from
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+10+-+64
(Did uninstall the current version first and disabled auto-update.)

Then I did follow the hints vonchen gave at https://community.amd.com/message/2753608

AMD versions prior to 16.9.2 had problems when changing the refresh rate.
Without enabling DX11, MC crashed when attempting to play a video.

For me (using an AMD RX 460 graphics card) this solution now works well.

The MC build at the top of this board has a more recent version of madVR.  Did you try it?

It's best to just use MC's Red October setting and let MC manage madVR.

Though I did update to the latest version (22.0.34) madVR was still 0.90.20. Could it be that only the update to .33 did include the madVR update, but not the later to .34? These two came within two days, so I could have skipped the .33 step.

Which more recent version of madVR than 0.90.24 (from http://madvr.com/) do you mean?

It's best to just use MC's Red October setting and let MC manage madVR.

Would like to do so, but without enabling madVR settings -> rendering -> general settings -> use Direct3D for presentation madVR causes to crash MC.
