Is it possible to easily send Media Center as a gift?
« on: October 13, 2003, 10:02:48 am »

Hello, I did a quick search here but didn't find the answer...

My father's birthday is coming up and I would like to buy him a copy of this great program, as he likes collecting digital pics and MP3s (almost as much as I do).

The problem is that I live in France, and he lives in Canada.

Can I pay for a new license online from my PC, and have him receive the email with the registration key?

Sorry if there is an obvious answer to this question that I overlooked.

Thanks in advance,
Kwake

i think the answer is yes, but you must use his e-mail address when you go to buy.

Jimh has said before users can have someone pay for there copy of MC9.

We set this up at one time, but no-one used it. Is there anyone else interested?

If I get a chance today I'll see if it is still available and let y'all know, feel free to bump and remind me, it's one of those kind of days.

Just checked the link https://rover.jriver.com/gift.html and that is exactly what I'm looking for, but for the product Media Center 9.1 (would be nice if the price stayed the same as what is listed there now thought... ;o)

My Dad's birthday is in 5 days (October 19th), so if it could be modified to accommodate my request before then, you have a sure sale.

Then, come Christmas time, I have about 4 or 5 more people in mind that would receive MC 9.1 as a gift from me, if I have a way to send it to them.

Cheers,
Kwake

On the same kind of note, my friend really wants to purchase MC, but doesn't have a credit card. I offered to let him use mine (my credit card, not licence :D ), but then realised that the name on the credit card is the name that it gets registered to. Is it possible to have a separate registered to name than that on the credit card?

Bumping this up for visibility...

Hopefully someone at JRiver can tell me if this will be done (before October 19th) and if not, if there is another way I can do this (maybe by paying with my credit card, and then changing the name on the license afterwards?)

It's possible to buy with your credit card and enter the e-mail address of the recipient.  The license would be then e-mailed to them.

Another way is to write them a check and ask them to purchase it with their own credit card.

Neither one is ideal, I know.

Thanks for your response Jim.

I take it by your answer you are not considering updating the page:  https://rover.jriver.com/gift.html to allow people to purchase MC 9.1 as a gift for someone?

If the page is there now, I'm surprised you won't consider a minor adjustment...

Thanks to confirm.

Hi Kwake,

Unfortunately it takes more than a minor adjustment to get the gift page working again.

Sorry,

OK, thanks for the confirmation John.

As a workaround, can you confirm that I can order a licence with my Credit Card, enter my Dad's email address, and that he'll be the legal owner of that license? Or will I need to do anything extra?

Thanks,
Kwake

p.s. If you get this gift page working by Christmas season, I predict you'll probably sell many more licenses than otherwise...

Sounds like your question has already been answered.

OK, I gave it a shot as suggested and here's what happened:

1. Went to the purchase web page and selected Media Center 9.0
2. Entered my father's email address and made up a password
3. Entered my name and credit card information
4. Watched as his licence was automatically installed on my copy of Media Center 9.1.

So I imagine what I do now is use a restore on my own license and re-apply it to my installed copy, and wait for my father's reaction to the email he should be receiving shortly.

Hopefully no major snags to come, I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers,
Kwake

Does this apply to the capital x's in your registration code too? If not.... somebody could do bad things....

Edit: I see it's been changed now :)

Yes, the capital X's were inserted into the reg code for that reason. But it's nice to see someone is looking out for me.  :)

Does anyone have any comments about how the transaction went? Any suggestions for improvement for those that want to send Media Centre as a gift this holiday season?

I'm hoping J River will decide to provide a nicer interface/transaction if more than just 1 customer feels it is needed. For example, replacing Media Jukebox with Media Center where necessary, providing a direct link to download the proper version, removing the price paid for the gift, etc.

Thanks,
Kwake

Hmmm, doesn't seem to be working out too well for my poor old Dad:

Ken,
I did a search and found four .mjr files. I double clicked them all and got the same error message:

"Error restoring Media center license. Failed extracting licence from file.".
 Dad

Any comments?

Check the license faq (top of this forum), and have him check his system clock.

Hi John, thanks for the advice.

I checked the licence faq and it doesn't seem to have any information on this error message. Do you think my Dad is misquoting it? In your position, would you be able to check if the MC code is able to display this particular error and what it means exactly? If this is a known, possible error - maybe it should be added to the faq with instructions on how to proceed.

I'll check my Dad's system clock, but wouldn't the error more specifically say "Time has expired, please use another restore" or something like that if this were the case?

Another question about restores: If I have to use a restore every time I purchase a license for a friend or family member - would J River consider extending the number if I run out at some point during the year (due to personal requirements to restore once in a while, as well as the gifts)?

Hi Kwake,

The error message is pretty generic, it was designed that way. If the FAQs don't help, I need a little more info on what he is trying (where did 4 MJRs come from?).

But it should work just fine if he goes to the restore page and enters his code.

If you search the archives, you'll find that JRiver is pretty friendly about resetting restores. It is not company policy nor am I promising anything, but in the past we've been nice about it.

More trouble...

Ken,
I think I have successfully registered Media Centre however, it is in your name. I'll have to figure out how to get it over to my name...Thanks for your guidance.
Dad

Any suggestions on next steps to sort this out?

Just a note for anyone following this thread to let them know I was contacted by someone at J River who fixed the registration issue (having my name instead of my Dad's name on his license) and also reset both of our restores for us.

So in the end, we were well taken care of by the good folks at J River. 8)

I made a final suggestion that there should be a special form from within Media Center to be used when purchasing a license for someone else, so that all these manual steps can be avoided in future.

Thanks,
Kwake
