Can't Burn CD as XP Power User
« on: November 05, 2003, 08:16:27 pm »

I am running MediaJukebox under Windows XP Pro SP1 that is a member of an NT4 domain containing about a half dozen users.  MediaJukebox works flawlessly with any user defined as ADMINISTRATOR for the XP workstation.  However, those user defined as POWERUSER are unable to burn discs.  The drive settings are greyed out and no drives are listed.  If the user is upgraded to ADMINISTRATOR, CD burning is available and works perfectly.  However, once downgraded back to POWERUSER, the drives disappear and CD burning is no longer possible.

I currently use a registered copy of MediaJukebox 8.0.399.  At the suggestion of Xen-Uno on the MJ8 forum, I tried installing MC9 to see if it corrects this issue.  Unforuntately, CD burner still ONLY shows up if the user is an ADMINISTRATOR.  Not good.

I like to think I am flexible and I avoid taking absolute positions on most issues, however, it is just plain unacceptable to have all users assigned to the ADMINISTRATOR group.  After using MediaJukebox for a couple of years, I really hate to leave it behind in the dust, especially since MC9 looks pretty darn cool now that I've installed it, but I am not willing to compromise system security just for CD buring.  It seems hard to believe that such a well designed product doesn't support user rights.

So, I am hoping for a workaround from this forum, or worse, a verifcation that there is no plan to correct this (i.e. it is a "feature" by design not a "bug").

Any suggestions?  Please?

BTW, my system is a Compaq Presario 8000 AMD Althon XP @ 1.66 GHz with 512MB and a Pioneer DVR-104 DVD-RW/CR-RW.

You need to give Power Users access to SCSI passthrough.

Here's a utility to configure that:

I had the same problem under Windows 2000. The "Set Burning Rights" utility that Matt mentioned above worked fine for me.

Yo Matt,

You the bomb, bro.  That config utility worked slicker than snot.  My Power Users can now BURN, baby, BURN.  Maybe this should be included in the MC toolbar or something?

Thanks for everyone's help on this.  Glad to have MJ back up and running.
