Media Center 11.0.67 Alpha Available
« on: August 24, 2004, 06:20:26 pm »

We're still working on Media Center 11.  We appreciate your feedback on it, but MC11 may not work as expected and we can't yet fully support it.  When upgrading from MC 10, you will lose your settings.  Some plugins still do not work.

If you want a more trouble-free experience, please download Media Center 10 here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110067.exe

Recent Changes

11.0.67 (8/24/04)

1. Fixed: MC wouldn't properly handle CUE files with relative paths.
2. Changed: MC 11 supports MC 10 (and previous) DSP plugins.
3. NEW: Portable Device Management changed to implement WMDM by default. For any device for which we have a plugin, the plugin will be automatically installed. Others will run via WMDM.
For devices which appear as removable or fixed drives, file management is handled by MC and only transfers go through WMDM.
4. NEW: M3U playlist support for generic USB Portable Devices. M3U playlists can be created and managed on Portables that support them.
5. Changed: Portable Device support of 'Album Artist Auto' removed. Field matching will be done on 'Artist' instead.
6. Fixed: Media Server TiVo support could fail to load MC 11's library in some cases.
7. NEW: Revised Theater View navigation model.
8. NEW: Theater View allows custom webpages and programs to be added. (right-click display > Theater View Options)

11.0.65 / 11.0.66 (8/23/04)

1. NEW: Added CUE file playback support of individual tracks. (note the sample-accurate MP3 seeking below)
2. NEW: MP3 plugin uses sample-accurate seeking for all seeks.
3. NEW: Improved playback range / seeking system inside player / decoder core to be sample-accurate everywhere.
4. Fixed: In some cases, track boundaries could creep when burning MP3 files.
5. Changed: MP3 length analyzer for VBR files w/o a xing header is much faster.
6. Changed: Updated APE playback plugin to support sample-accurate seeking for CUE support.
7. NEW: Playback range is honored during conversion and audio analysis.
8. Fixed: IRMan plugin support was not functioning properly.
9. Changed: MC 11 now supports MC 10 (and previous) remote control plugins.
10. Fixed: Some right-click commands would not enable / disable properly in certain views.
11. NEW: Several image editor improvements and fixes.
12. Fixed: Selecting no file associations would cause MC to associate with the default types on install.
13. Fixed: The plural 'All' listing in the panes could be invalid in some cases.
14. Fixed: String type fields could be stored numerically in some cases. (i.e. Artist: 0.9)
15. Fixed: On non-administrative XP accounts, MC could report a 'Critical error #21' and not function properly.
16. NEW: Added location bar to the top of the Hairstyle Theater View skin.
17. NEW: Added ability to show webpages inside of Theater View. (currently hard coded as 'News', but will be user-customizable soon)

MC 11 Improvements

  • CUE file playback support with sample-accurate MP3 seeking
  • Many Theater View enhancements
  • Animated Direct3D file browsing
  • Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)
  • Vastly improved database engine capable of handling 100,000's of files and large amounts of metadata (lyrics, bios, etc.)
  • Several memory and speed enhancements -- like database and skin unloading when minimizing MC
  • Much of MC's interface can be translated to other languages
  • Integrated database import and update with smart broken linking repairing, and other nice features
  • MC can run with guest permissions on Windows 2000 / Windows XP
  • New view customization system with more flexibility for thumbnail size, text, etc.
  • Options dialogs reworked -- several small options added
  • Added multi-zone synchronization
  • Added Album Gain support
  • Document support with full text searching / indexing
  • Pane auto-sizing
  • Tile view that allows fully customizable Track Info style tiles to be used in file lists
  • New database caching layer that makes a huge speed difference in many areas of MC
  • File tagging happens in a background thread so MC can continue to be used while it's saving tags
  • Basic image editing
  • Enhanced album grouping for pictures so pictures taken together get grouped without any user intervention
  • Preview mode to only play the intro of songs

1) When MC11 starts, the Windows taskbar isn't updated until you alt-tab away and back again.
2) (Build .65/.66 and .67 - prior builds are fine) - CBR MP3 files burn only the first 26 seconds to disc.

Before I get labeled insane, can someone please confirm #2.  I have two computers, both very different from one another, and it happens exactly the same on both.  .64 and older work fine as long as direct-decode is disabled.

Would you send one of the files to matt at jriver.com?  The MP3 plugin changed a lot to have sample-accurate seeking, so maybe there's a problem with certain files.

Thanks.

Having MC launch a program causes it to crash :(
I have tried this with many programs and MC crashes after launching every one.

Good Evening...

Requests:

**Can you please add    .csv to the supported list. It opens with MS Excell.
**Be able to have the EQ always visible in MegaMe
**Be able to change the tool tip fonts and background color... Would love to be able to use the ThunderStorm windowblinds skin again.
**Any way for you guys to be able to let us specify different Import locations for each library
**Can we be able to view www.last.fm from within MC. This is for the AudioScrobbler Plugin.
** Last Played.. 88:45 ago.. Can this be changed to days after 23:59? ie  1 Day 10:10 instead of 34:10

I know this is a day late and a dollar short, but about your Search Bar enhancements.... wow!  Good stuff!

(I know this was introduced many builds ago, but I just got around to noticing it only now. :))

On a negative note (I'm sorry :(), editing a smarlist after the fact via the "by typing" method is still very flaky and unintuitive IMHO.

To prove my point, go grab someone off the street who's never used MC, sit him or her in front of it, click on the predefined smartlist "Random Top Hits", and then instruct him or her to change that 4 to a 5 via the "by typing" method and see how many dozens of mistakes that are made before he or she finally gets the task accomplished (if ever!).

Also, the only way to exit the typing editing mode is to hit ESC.  You guys need to accept "<Enter>" as a terminating keystroke as well. ;)

I do not see the CUE file fix here. If I import, I see a count that looks correct but no selections from a CUE file appear in the library and there is no CUE entry under File Type.

Perhaps I am not looking in the right place? Doing something wrong/odd?

I installed 66 with defaults and I installed/update 67 the same.
I do an Import and select Ignore small files, Fix or remove broken links, Update for external changes.

However, I do not see CUE listed as a default type or a type to scan for.

As for the plugins, YES! My Direct-X host is working fine now. Thanks!

Thanks for supporting now the new DFX 7 plug-in.
Why is it that de DFX display used to be incorporated in DSP Studio, while with the new version there is 'No display available' in DSP Studio and the DFX display opens as a separate application aside (in fact behind) MC?

There are no CUE types in the library.
I am going to clear the library, restart MC, import again. Back in a few.

Ok, that's been done.
At the end of the import I'm told that 4061 files have been added. But the Audio view has only 2202 and none are from a CUE.
All Media view also has none.

BTW- The Advanced-Hard Disk Location list needs a horizontal scrollbar. By time I get to documents and settings/etc/etc/etc the directories are not visiable without resizing the pane.

Illegal Characters in temp files
« Reply #12 on: August 24, 2004, 09:25:49 pm »

After using MC (both 10 and now 11) I occasionally see 'bad' files left behind in my temp directory.
The filenames end in a question mark and so can't be deleted/renamed/whatever.
An example is APE Decompressed Cover Art (temp)jpg?

Anyone know how to remove these files?

GHammer,

Make an empty library for testing.  Then drop a CUE file on to the Playing Now list.  Do files show up?

If not, send the CUE file to matt at jriver.com and we'll see if we can reproduce.

Thanks.

Issues:

1) Find & Replace cancel button doesn't work & interface drawing is halted during the search
2) Media import won't just let me type in the path, I have to browse...
3) Saving tag changes is SLOOOOOOOOOOW!
My library was set up pointing to files at \\Data\data\Music\..., but with the new import stuff, there's no way to add a UNC path.  \\Data\data\Music\ also happens to be D:\Music on this machine (local drive), so I just did a Find & Replace on all the files to change \\Data\data\ to D:\.  That took > 5 minues for a little over 3000 files.  Once that was done, MC started to update the tags (although I don't think this operation should have caused any changes that required a tag update) and it's still going at a rate of about 1 tag/second?!?!  At least I can keep working while MC changes the tags in the background...

3. NEW: Portable Device Management changed to implement WMDM by default. For any device for which we have a plugin, the plugin will be automatically installed. Others will run via WMDM.
For devices which appear as removable or fixed drives, file management is handled by MC and only transfers go through WMDM.

This appears to be screwing up my iPod transfers. I may just not know how to configure it, but now MC is just transferring all files to the root of the iPod directory and thus, the iPod OS can't see any of the newly added files. How do I disable WMDM support? I don't see the option in Devices.

Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)

Still doesn't work for me.

- Changes made to the library doesnt'get reverted when leaving Party Mode
- Even permanent Changes to ID3-Tags are possible

Indeed they do.
And with .67 when I right click and choose Import into Library, they are added. And stay added.
The only thing that is not working right now is File-Library-Import Media
I believe that function sees the cues and the selections in the cues, but they are not visible anywhere I have looked.

The ones that I add manually play fine though!

You can get stuck in Theatre view when you browse to a folder that has no files in it. The back button is displayed but you cannot use it anymore.
e.g.
My videos are in Z:\TV and I have a view scheme set up to browse via path.
If I go video -> all Location (z:\TV\) all I can see is just back in the file list. This does not work and still gives you the options a file would, play etc..
Of course you can use Home to get back to the start, just doesn't look too elegant and might confuse.

2) (Build .65/.66 and .67 - prior builds are fine) - CBR MP3 files burn only the first 26 seconds to disc.
You're not insane.  We can duplicate this.  Should be fixed next build.  Thanks for your patience and for the clear details you provided.

Problem:

Can't rip CDs. Clicking either "Drives & Devices" in the tree or "Rip CD" in the action window causes the "Gathering info" message box, then MC crashes.

Moving the crashed dialogue box to one side reveals an MC dialogue box headed "Server busy" with the text "This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch to' to activate the busy program and correct the problem".

Please help!

Hi,

Okay, I solved my problem myself (see post above). The problem was with the memory stick driver for the built in memory stick drive on my VAIO. Updating the driver solved the problem (from the VAIO-link website). The problem will probably affect anyone installing MC11 on one of the latest VAIOs (A series and K series).

Right, next problem:

Ripping a CD and encoding to MP3 192kbps CBR (High Quality setting), actually appears to encode at 188kbps??
