New MS Mouse No tiltwheel in MC
« on: October 13, 2003, 10:06:32 pm »

I just picked up one of the new Microsoft wireless mice with the tiltwheel for side to side scrolling but the tiltwheel does not work in MC. :(

One of the main reason I thought this would be great is for left/right scrolling in my library. What are the chances this can be addressed?

<checks his calendar>

Yup, it's been about 6 months. Time to upgrade to a new and better mouse. This Logitech MX700 is old news now...

<curses his mouse obsession>

Damn you! Damn you all to hell!!!

I'll join you at the mousers anonymouse meetings. I upgraded from a 6 month old MX500.

Darn annoying that Logitech and MS have product cycles that are offset by six months. This way instead of choosing one new mouse a a year I am forced by my obsession to new rodent thrills twice a year. ;D

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this terrible affliction.

So is this new MS mouse worth upgrading to from the MX700? There isn't much info about it on MS's site. It's the Cordless Explorer, right?

The MX700 has 8 buttons on it, which is really nice. And I like the layout of the buttons much better than what MS has been putting out lately. I actually haven't bought and MS mouse for 3 replacements now. Actually... 4. But it's always been because of the button layout. The last MS mouse I've owned was the Explorer Optical... but because of where the two thumb buttons were located, I replaced it with a Mouseman... um... the funky shaped one with the single thumb button.

Then came the Cordless mouseman, then the cordless optical, and now the MX700. I'm wondering if MS has finally put something out that rivals Logitech.

The two big things that I wanted to try were the tilt wheel for the left/right scrolling. And the scroll wheel is a smooth motion (no detents) wheel.

So far I really like the side scroll ability, hopefully they can make it work in MC. I wasn't sure I would like the smooth motion of the wheel but after an hour I find I prefer it.

As for buttons it's the same as previous top of the line MS mice. w/std left right plus two thumb and the wheel itself.

I never used the three buttons on the top of the MX500. I found the two on the palm side of the wheel to be awkward to use. Seems unatural to move my hand back off the wheel to reach them. Then there's the fact that Logitech's driver has problems in many games so I was actually using the MS intellipoint ver 4 driver with the MX500 which ment I couldn't use the extra buttons anyway.

Actually the MX series was the first from Logitech  to have two thumb buttons, prior they had only one. MS added the extra thumb button first. In fact the last mouse I used for a full year was the MS mouse I replaced with the MX500.

Yeah, I'll admit that the task-switch button is a little hard to use at times (so much so that I don't bother), but the two auto-cruise buttons aren't too bad. I mainly just use them when I'm reading a long document on the screen, so it's not too bad to just reposition my hand for that task.

The thumb buttons on the MS mice have always just felt awkward to me. I have to really tweak my thumb to get it to hit the buttons, and with the way my knuckles crack and pop know, I didn't think they needed any help.

And I know what you mean about the Logitech drivers and games. It's the one thing that just drives me nuts about it. I did find a workaround, though. You just kill the EM_EXEC process and the problem goes away. Then you just have to restart it when you're done playing. But since I've created two seperate accounts on my PC, one for gaming and one for normal use, it was a piece of cake to just set it up so the Logitech drivers don't run under my gaming account (along with a bunch of other stuff).

I'll definitely be checking out this new MS mouse. I wonder how long it'll be before Logitech releases their own tilt-wheel design... :)

I'll toss my vote in for tilt-wheel support. I've had the new faux-leather mouse for a couple weeks and like it quite a bit. The smooth scroll-wheel is especially nice, although the middle button is a bit harder to push than previous models. Anyway, I think that Media Center could benefit from this side scrolling behavior since the bottom right third of the navigation relies on scrolling left to right.

I just got one of these new MS mice with the sideways scroller in it. It would be really handy if it could be made to work with MC.

I recently picked up the new Microsoft keyboard/mouse combo with the tilt wheel mouse.  I like it a lot although I'm not sure if I like it more than the Logitech Mx Duo I had before.  The Microsoft keyboard is more reactive (I could out-type the Logitech easily) but I think I liked the Logitech MX700 mouse better.  It took me awhile to get used to the mouse's soft scroll wheel rather than the usual clicky-scroll wheel.

What I want now, though is this:

If I could get the media controller/keypad part to work with MC, that'd be incredibly sexy.

I sure hope detent-less wheels (and a too soft middle click spring...and USB only connections - I like PS/2) don't become the norm. A strong detent offers some resistance from rolling which is nice on a middle click. Another machine here has a mouse with a weak detent and middle spring, making it very hard to use on the web (I keep activating the autoscroll). My baby is a LogiTech Optical, which I rebuilt (wore a groove in the left button post that contacts the switch...epoxied a section of paper clip to the underside and she runs real good now :))

Speaking of sexy, here's a rough photo of her...
