MC won't read or play an audio disk burned with MC
« on: October 16, 2003, 07:27:03 pm »

I'm getting the following message when I put a CD (audio format) into my PC's CD drive (was created using MC 9.1):
Quote
Media Center has detected a new CD in drive:D but can't get the correct volume information.  Please try ejecting and reinserting the CD

I tried ejecting and inserting and still got the same error message.  Also, the disk is read by Windows Media Player and Creative's Play Center as well as being played in a DVD player fine.

I do have a problem when trying to look at files through My Computer, so I'm not sure where the problem lies.

It would be helpful if you posted your system info (from the Help menu).

Also, do you have the latest build installed?

Sorry, I'm new to the program.  I hope this can help.

This has been reported by several people and we're trying to track down the problem. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it on our computers. Is the CD still inaccessible after pressing F5 (refresh view)? After closing down and restarting MC? After rebooting?

Thanks,
John T.

John,
I am away from my home PC, but I know I closed and restarted MC, and it didn't help.  I don't think I tried refresh(F5) or rebooting.  I'll try that tonight and report back.

Tonight, I tried F5 and closing and opening the program. Didn't help.

However, when I rebooted the PC, the disk was able to be read and played using MC.  Also, the My Computer dialog box works properly.

Some further testing:

If I reboot the machine with the disk in the drive, MC can read it.  I doesn't matter if it was created with MC or not.  Same thing happens with purchased music CDs.  I can change disks and subsequent disks can be read.

However, if I select a playlist that accesses files on the computer, then stop and put the disk in the CD drive, MC gives me the same error message shown in the opening post.

Edit: I tried to duplicate the problem in the paragraph above and I couldn't.  Right now it's working fine.  If I have the problem again, I'll try to figure out what is different.

I may have found a possible fix.  Haven't tested enough, but only had one problem trying to read disk, versus majority of the time before.

This Autoplay wizard was just released from Microsoft, and it did report problems with my CD-RW and repaired it.

Hope this can help others.

Please let us know if this fixes the problem. Then we can put it in the FAQ.

John T, I am still having some problems, so I can't reach the conclusion that the Autofix program will definitely do the job.  However, now that I have run the program, I am having fewer problems, so for some people running Autofix may help.

My Dell is about a year old and from the beginning I often had to eject and reinsert a disk after powering on in order to get the drive to work.  This almost always did the trick until recently.

When I started having problems with MC, I also had some problems getting MS Streets and Trips 2002 and regular audio CDs to play.  The few times I've tried since using Autofix, those disks have been fine.

Tonight after powering on, I used IE to visit some internet sites.  Then I put a computer created audio CD in the drive.  Autoplay is supposed to launch into MC.  It didn't.  When I tried to access the disk from within MC, I got the same message as reported in the opening post.  Then I went into WMP and Creative Play Center and the disk was read fine.  When I closed those programs and went back into MC, MC did read and play the disk.  Go figure.
