IPOD & Other MP3 Players & Mono Files
« on: December 31, 2003, 11:06:02 am »

Been Thinking About MP3 Players For Sometime

And Just Wondering If The IPOD Plays Mono MP3's?

The Reason I Ask Is I Have A Player But It Has A Problem Playing Mono Files and am trying to look for something that will work for me.

I Was Also Wondering if There Are Other Players That Have Problems With Mono Files Or Play Mono Files With No Problems.

The Specs:

Quote
Audio support AAC, MP3 (32 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible, WAV(6)

I already see a problem with MY OTR files some are 16-24kbps and the IPOD would not play them.

I am not sure if the changes made recently for Portables will also work with the IPOD (force Bitrate convert to maybe 32kbps from 16-24kbps) or not anyone know?

if Mono does not work on the IPOD i would need a force convert to Stereo Option.

King,

Email an example of a file you are concerned if it will play, and I will test it and let you know.

Cut a 2 to 3 minute chunk out of it using Media Editor. It should have no problems saving the selection in the original format.

it would be easyer to just find someone with a mono file to just test it on a IPOD and other players.

the Spec sheet for the IPOD does not say anything if it does or does not play mono files that i could see.

I don't know if it is related, but the (only) Audible book I have is mono & does not play on the iPod, though it plays in MC10.

I guess the IPOD does not play mono files then.

I Also have been sent other E-mails stating the same thing about the IPOD

and one user said he had another mp3 player that also did not support mono files.

Let Me Guess, No One Can get Mono Files To Play On There MP3 Player

I just tried Boston Blackie and Richard Diamond.

The first time I tried to transfer them to my IPOD, I got transfer failures from MC.  Both transferred on a second try and played fine.  The IPOD is a 20gig unit with the 2.1 software installed.  Using MC 10.0.27 with the latest plugins.

Maybe MC Has Problems With Transfering Large Files To The IPOD

And I Guess:

1 Vote Mono Files Work
1 Vote Mono Files Don't Work

Both Not Making Me Want To Drive To Best Buy Yet

I don't know.  I think my first failure might have just been user error.  I only bought the ipod this afternoon.

I just uploaded 10 tracks, 5 mono and 3 stereo ranging from 60 to 90 MB each, all CBR,  and all transferred and played fine.  Did it several times.

Just for the heck of it, I did a VBR mono 65mb file and it transferred and played OK as well.

King,

Sorry for the delay in testing this. I downloaded the cheery title "Death For Sale" to iPod and it played without a problem.  Best Buy is open until 10.

Hi King,
just loaded the mp3s and played them on my little Jukebox. No Problems ;D.

It's an Archos Recorder with a 20 Gig HD - 2,5 years old and still excellent...
I use it with Rockbox, an Open Source replacement firmware. The best Software i have ever seen for a portable HDD-Player and very useable with MC. I use the same Filetrees, so that i can "mirror" the MC and Archos HDDs. Same music everywhere and everytime...
Some guys built a 120 Gig in their Archos !
