Choose Data Type for a Calculated data field
« on: August 28, 2004, 01:52:47 am »

Is there a way to choose the Data Type of Calculated data field?

Since a song can be classed in several and different genres :
I want to create a new field "Genres" which would use as Template : <[Genre]> and wich has "List (semicolon separated)" as Data Type instead of the basic String one.

I will allow me to find a song tagged "Pop;Rock" within Pop and Rock Genres (like it is already possible in WMP10!).

Simply copy the values of Genre into the new field Genres and use only this field form now on. You will have all values inside that list field and don't need and extra calculated field.

If J River should change one day Genre to a list field you could simply copy back the values of Genres to Genre and change the appropriate view schemes.

Thanks Jaguu.
It's work fine :)
I still wondering if I will need to copy the "Genre" values to the "Genres" field every time I import (or RIP) new files?

NO, they will be there for you to select unless there is a new genre coming up.

Well, I'm trying to do almos the same thing from what i understand.

I basically want to have calculated data as follow: (Simplified example)
Rock And Roll=([Sub-Genres]=[Acoustic Rock],[Alternative Rock],[Classic Rock].....)
Electronic=([Sub-Genres]=[Electronic],[Dance],[House].....)
....

At the end it would basically come down to 6-8 predefined "Genres" that would automatically classify songs according to their "sub-genres" tag.

While I know how to create Smartlist for each of those genres, I just don't get how to put all these in a single string... :(

Can u guys give me an example on how to do that?

Thanks,

Build a smartlist for each genre.  Use the wizard to add a sub-genre rule, and check each sub-genre you want included.
