Title: MC16 Failed to Load JRTools.dll
Post by: Chasoscar on February 24, 2011, 09:02:39 pm
Hey
I just installed the latest MC16, but after restoring my Library from a MC14 backup I would get a critical error saying it failed to load JRTools.dll and to reinstall the latest version. I did, but I am still getting the same error.

I think the problem is probably because the prog is trying to locate the MC16 JRTools file in the old MC14 Installation directory.  I wanted to use MC16 along side of MC14 for the time being so I installed MC16 in a new/separate directory because I wanted to preserve my settings and thought the new installation "might" overwrite them if I installed to the same directory.

If I do need to install into the MC14 directory will I still have all my settings(i.e.- preferences, playlist, toolbar setup, views etc)? In other words......... how do I install MC16 and keep all my settings. Do I need to completely uninstall MC16 and reinstall in the original MC14 directory?
TIA for you help

It should be safe to have v14 and v16 installed at the same time.  It's best to only run one at a time.

If one version isn't working, just reinstall it over the top of the existing installation.

Thanks Matt......
But just so I am sure what you mean. I need to uninstall MC16 and reinstall it in the same directory as I installed MC14 and if I do that I will NOT lose any of my MC14 settings....(prefs, playlist, toobar settings, view schemes)?
Thanks,
Chas

Install to separate folders.  Make a library backup in v14 and restore it into v16.

Thanks for clarifying........ Sorry about the double post but I was frustrated because I did not fully understand your response above and I have already tried reinstalling that way twice with the same error....... Im not sure why it is looking for the JRTools file in the MC14 directory and it seems to me that is what is causing the problem. I will try again and let you know if it persist.
Thanks

Im Frustrated........ I have un/reinstalled 3 times and STILL getting the same critical error. I still believe it has something to do with MC16 searching for its version of the  JRTools.dll file in the older MC14 directory instead of the new MC16 directory.
This is the first time I noticed the mention of the out_main.dll file.......... Could that be the problem?
Any Ideas would be appreciated

This probably won't help you much with your error but I installed MC 16 along MC 15 in a different folder. When I started MC 16 all the settings, libs, playlists and so on were as I had them in MC 15.

The only thing that was not present was my own Track Info View which doesn't really work with the switch to the Chromium Browser Engine.

Is this related to the loss of embedded visualizations in a track info display in v15 and I assume v16?

Still no luck..... MC Keeps insisting that I reinstall to fix the problem, but after 5 tries Ive given up on thinking that will help. I wish someone from JRiver would assure me that MC16 trying to fetch a files from the MC14 directory is normal and not the cause of the problem, but I have been unable to get anyone to confirm that.

I had hopes of using 14 along with 16 until I had a chance to check out 16 since 14 is rock solid. I hate to "have to" uninstall 14 with hopes of using 16 especially since I am not even sure that would fix the problem. I even tried installing MC16 in the same directory with MC14(thinking that might solve the path conflict)but the installer would not allow it.

It would be nice to have some input or ideas of other things I might try.

Backup your library from MC14

Uninstall MC16, choosing the option to "remove registry entries".

Reboot

Reinstall MC16 using the default choices

Restore your MC14 library to MC16

Okay...... here is what is happening...... I can get MC16 to install/register/import and run correctly but without any of my old settings. Immediately after restoring my old MC14 library and settings and attempt to play any track I get the critical error(in the above screencapture) stating
"the following module failed to load C:\programs files\mc14\plugins\out_main.dll"
                                   "Failed to loadJRTools.dll"
Im not sure why I have not gotten an explanation about this and it may not be the problem, but can someone please explain to me why MC16 would be looking for the out-main.dll in the MC14 directory........ seems to me that this could be causing the problem, but I just dont know. I have put many hours into getting things set up the way they are in MC14 and things are rock solid there....... I just hate to lose all my settings and have to start from scratch with MC16.
Again........ Any help or ideas of new things to try would be greatly appreciated
Ed you there? ;D
Thanx
Chas

chasoscar,

I upgraded to 16 yesterday from 15. (I still have v15 on my computer).
All worked fine until I loaded my own library. Couldn't figure out how to do it, so I copied my v15 library folder into a new "v16" folder then Added a new library per the tree and pointed there. I got the same error you got: MC16 Failed to Load JRTools.dll

I re-installed v16 (without removing it first) and everything seems to be working fine (except that I can't right-click in the Display area in Playing Now to access visualizations, but I doubt that is related to this issue).

Coping the library to a new folder probably isn't a great idea, but MC16 will convert it so it might work.

Better would be to back up from MC15 and restore in MC16.  That also gets your settings.

Just a wild guess... Given the nature of the error, I would wonder if some plugin installed in MC14 was causing this. I would try disabling or uninstalling any third party plugins in MC14 and rebooting.

Thanks Rick...... I had already tried that(the prog suggest that as a default solution) but it didnt help.
Still no answer to my mc14 path conflict question ..........I guess I will have to assume that it is normal for 16 to look for its .dll files in the 14 directory........ it just doesnt seem right. I feel like I am being ignored in my own thread~~~~
Still Looking........... Anyone else?

Geez, I just checked and I have 6 copies of JRTools.dll in the following folders:

C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 15\           2,434 KB
C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 15\x64\    3,528 KB

C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 16\          2,089 KB
C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 16\x64\    3,047 KB

C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Program Files\              2,089 KB
C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Program Files\x64\        3,047 KB

Amazing it failed to load  ;D

Yeah, I only have 2 instances of that file....... one for MC14 and one for 16, but when I try to play a track in 16 it looks for the file in 14. Looking at yours, I would be suspicious of the third set....... I dont think you should have a  J River\Program Files directory(looks like it could be a dup of the 2nd set)

Yeah, I posted about that directory in another thread. Wondered if it was a Win7 thing. Hopefully I can get confirmation either way from other Win7 users who installed v16.

Im using Win7/32 on this box and I dont have those directories but I am still working out this JRTools thing. I have a couple more things I am going to try tonight and I will let you know if it changes.

If I cant get the my problem solved on this box I also have a Win7/64 box that I just completed and I am going to try a fresh install of mc16 on it(it has no MC on it at all) and then try to import my mc14 library to it. I dont think I should have the JRTools problem........ fingers crossed!

If I were you I would rename all instances of the dll (and move them to a temp folder) then I would just re-install v16 over your existing v16. That might get MC to recreate the file.

You know that is not a bad idea.... but I am whipped right now. Ill bet I have un/reinstalled close to a dozen times trying everything I can think of. Ive checked the logs but cant find anything that would cause it, at least no mention of the problem dll files. I Never got around to trying it on the Win7/64 box but I am optimistic. That will have to wait until tomm. It is nice to know that I am not the only one that has experienced the problem cause that means it "could be" a glitch in the program that the team just hasnt worked out yet ......... it would be nice tho if the team would be a little more "interact"ive with suggestions. I know they will probably jump on me for saying that but Im tired of messing with it and out of options.

This thing should just take 1 minute or less though, because you don't have to uninstall anything. Just reclick on your downloaded v16 (assuming you've got the latest) and you will be done. If it works, hooray. If not then there's more troubleshooting to be done--tomorrow ;)
