Title: What is the "grouping field"?
Post by: lise on April 28, 2009, 10:07:17 am
I'm slow.
I just noticed that one of my albums has the genre: alt-indie-rock, and in the tag menu below genre is a field called "grouping", which includes "alternative: Indie".

I have no clue what that field is or how it got populated.
Examples of usage would be helpful as well, to give me an idea of what I can do with this field.

Anyone?
Is it part of stacks?
I explored stacks a while back, but I thought I played around with photos, not music.
Does the use of stacks add this grouping field?

The Grouping field was mainly added for those who have used the Grouping field in iTunes.

It is linked with the TIT1 ID3v2 field.

Here's the official definition by id3.org:

TIT1
The 'Content group description' frame is used if the sound belongs to
a larger category of sounds/music. For example, classical music is
often sorted in different musical sections (e.g. "Piano Concerto",
   "Weather - Hurricane").

I don't know why Apple decided to include a "Grouping" field in iTunes (it has a very limited amount of fields in total) and how the iTunes users are supposed to use it.

Thanks for the reply, Alex.
I guess it is being filled by emusic or YADB, as these are the only online sources I use.
