Would you like MC 12 to have subtitle support for Video files?
« on: September 26, 2006, 10:25:57 am »

Would you like MC 12 to have subtitle support for
video files? Subtitles support like: (.sub .srt .smi)

Windows Media Player supports subtitles with video files.
It would be awesome if Media Center 11/12 did the same thing.

This would be very useful for me. I'm hoping to build/expand my home theatre such that all my media is played via some sort of HTPC with MC being the main engine. Since I live in Japan I frequently watch movies with subtitles.

MC can show all usual subtitle formats if DirectVobSub (VSfilter) is installed.

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303

http://www.free-codecs.com/DirectVobSub_download.htm?PHPSESSID=66ca961ecac7eeca8ec371fb2f9609ba

Oh thanks! Nice to know!
But I think what Matthew want is a better integration with MC. Mannualy browsing to subtitles files each time is tedious!
I don't know if it's easy or even possible but it would be so cool if MC was able to pass the content of different fields (which would contain the path to the subtitle files) to VSFilter. This way, pressing the the audio button on my remote control would cycle throw all subtitles available for the playing video :D
(I'm certainly asking too much and I must admit that what Alex B proposed is enough for now  :-\)

Wondering if there are non-fluent-english-speakers who voted for No...

Forget what I said for now : A kind of autoload seems to be possible in the filter's configuration... I will have a look @ home to see how this works!

I voted no before I read Alex's comment... But I was going to say:

DirectVobSub can autoload the subtitle file if it has the same filename as the video file (naturally with a different filename extension).

The usual method is to keep the subtitle file in the same folder with the video file, but you can also configure relative or absolute paths in DirectVobSub's options.

One thing.... I'd strongly recommend that you just install CCCP rather than DirectVobSub on it's own.  Some of the older versions of it can cause all sorts of nasty problems (and it seems to like to run on it's own whether there's subs available or not).  CCCP is really the codec pack to use (if you're looking for easy), and it includes DirectVobSub The Proper VersionTM and sets it up properly for you.  (It also handily installs a version of FFDSHOW that doesn't have broken DVD Audio support, unlike the 20051129 build.)

In fact, since I am a native English speaker, the only thing I have to do to configure it is turn OFF the "auto" subtitle support (or I get english subs with english audio sometimes which is a little silly unless you have trouble hearing).  That's easy though, you just set it to "always hide subtitles unless forced" and all is good and right with the world.

I suppose I belong to this category. Usually I prefer to watch English movies with English subtitles. I have learnt quite a bit of practical English in that way.

The rest of my family prefers Finnish subtitles if available.

Probably posting on Interact almost every day doesn't hurt either.   ;)

Yes.  Yes it is.  It does some other great things too.

For example, if you have any video files that actually have other audio tracks embedded (like Spanish, Finnish, French, or the "commentary track") it will bring up Haali Media Splitter in the tray and you can use it to choose which audio track to listen to.

It also installs pretty much every conceivable codec or filter you could possibly need to playback your a/v files, with the exception of Quicktime MOVs (just get Quicktime) and Real Media files (which you can use RealAlternative for).

I am too lazy to read subtitles. I just want to concentrate on the movies and prefer to convert them to divx including german and english audio tracks (english just in case!).
Of course not all languages are lucky enough to have their own audio tracks!

Jim added this to the FAQ on the main board (which is a good idea).  However, this thread is in the MC12 beta board so not everyone can see it.

You might want to just move the whole thread over to the plain, vanilla MC board so everyone has the benefit of it.  CCCP and Subtitles work just as well with MC11.1 anyway...

This board should be open in a week or two.

Ahhh.... No big merger of this stuff with the vanilla MC board eh?  That's really probably best I suppose (and a lot less of a pain).

I suspected that it might be opening pretty soon.  Even said it last night...

I have absolutely no inside knowledge of JRiver's plans regarding the MC12 beta program expansion at all.  That said... I thought I'd mention that I would guess that the next time they signifigantly "expand" the Beta program it would be to open it up to everyone.

It's coming along now far enough that I think they might be starting to re-evaluate that move.

Again.  I could be completely wrong and I'm just guessing here.

I’d like to be able to link video files and subtitle files somehow within the MC library so that if I do a “Rename files from properties” on the files, the subtitles get renamed and moved too.

I have imported my .srt and .vob subtitle files too. They are not visible in the video category (which I prefer). I use an "All Media" view for handling them.

You could just modify the Step 4 on the Video parent View Scheme to:

Code: [Select]
([Media Type]=Video OR [File Type]=<subtitle file type #1> OR [File Type]=<subtitle file type #2>)

I meant that it is fine to not see them in the Video category. I do all tagging and file operations elsewhere in details view.
