MC crasheswhen changing from a Shoutcast .pls to another
« on: October 19, 2006, 01:00:53 am »

Hi!
I posted this under .95 which is now closed...
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=36458.msg248859#msg248859

jimn: I seem to have this problem only at my computer at home. The one I'm using at work seems to be ok. Internet connection is 8Mbs in, 1 Mbs out. I downloaded the .pls-files renamed them and imported them to a playlist and use them in the playlist window. I reinstalled .95 yesterday evening but it didn't help. I get an error message immediately when I change to another stream. MC stays open and plays what it was playing before, Then I have to close MC and after clicking the X I get additional error messages (something about memory violations I think).
I'll check this further when I get home from work. At the home computer my MC library is not in the default location under my profile but in a folder on another local drive.

This is the thrown error when changing pls

AppName: media center 12.exe    AppVer: 12.0.96.0    ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180    Offset: 00018fea

I get this when I close MC "The instruction at 0x7c918fea referenced memory at 0x00000010. The memory could not be written"

II downloaded the .pls-files renamed them and imported them to a playlist and use them in the playlist window.

John,

Thanks for the addition info. It provides some useful clues in trying to duplicate the error.

When you say you "downloaded" does that mean the stream your playing consists of a big file somewhere on one of your hard drives, or do you mean you have a playlist with the URLs that still stream from Shoutcast?

Thanks,

Yes.
Same thing happens when click on a shoutcast-link in the browser MC starts to play... when i click on  another link MC throws the error but starts eventually to play the new stream. Changing a stream for the third time MC exits immediatelly followed by one ore more error messages

It seems always to be an xxx18fea error.

No problems what so ever when playing normal audio files!

Hi John,

You mentioned your library is in a secondary drive. Does your primary drive have limited free space?

For buffered streams MC opens and stores the data in a temporary file in:

Document and Settings\[user]\Local Settings\Temp\JRTemp

This is on your primary windows drive, of course. JRTemp directory is removed when the program closes. The temp files can grow roughly a 1mb per minute of play. It's also possible the temp files can't get deleted when they play is over as they should.

None is this effects regular audio files.

Another potentially useful test is to see if you can generate the error by pressing stop on the playing thread before changing to a new one.

Let me know if disk space in your windows drive and/or permissions for deleting might be factors in this error.

Thanks,

JimN

I just installed latest .98 on the kids computer and it crashed in the same way with the same error as earlier on our other computer. This new installation uses all default settings and the default library is empty. Both computers where MC crashes have AMD processors (diffrerent chipsets though) and ATI graphcards . The one installation at work that seems to work have a Pentium processor (I don't remember the type, 3 GHz)

Kids computer specs:

Media Center Registered 12.0.98 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 12\

I think I have managed to isolate the problem with the crashes. It seems like MC and the IMON module of NOD32 anti-virus programs are incompatible reg. the shoutcast pls-files. When I disabled the IMON-module I managed to change the streaming station without any hickups.

Could anyone else with NOD32 try this

After playing around a little bit with NOD32 and IMON-module... You have to exclude MC12 from being scanned otherwise MC12 crashes when changing from one shoutcast-stream to another (at least on our computers).

To exclude MC12 from scanning -> Open NOD32 Control Center > Select IMON > Click on Setup > On Miscellaneous-tab in Exclusion field click on Edit... > Add MC12 to the list > Reboot

Well this is a workaround, kind of, until NOD32 and MC12 work more seamlessly together

Hi John,

I installed NOD32, but unfortunately, I couldn't duplicate the crashes you were getting. I did make some changes to the program that could concievably generate crashes. So whenever you have a chance, please try the next build (99?) with the exclusion off and see if it makes any difference.

Also, just to double check: you put the exclusion for MC12 in the IMON module and not the AMON module, right?

Thanks for all the time and effort in tracking down this conflict -- errors from 3rd party program conflicts can be exceedingly difficult for us to track down.

I'll do that

Same problem with .99. Actually also streaming Web Media triggers a crash when changing from one stream to another UNLESS MC excluded in NOD32 (Imon)

We also have ContentProtect (from ContentWatch) installed because of the kids but I couldn't find any problems with that

Hi!
MC:s not the problem!
I think it's NOD32's IMON module together with ContentProtect. I've now experienced same crashes with other streaming applications.
Thanks for the effort and sorry for the fuzz!
