Unable to escape "playing now" in theatre view
« on: November 04, 2015, 09:04:59 am »

I had a situation yesterday where MC was working normally and nothing was playing. If I went into theatre view then it would go straight into the "Playing Now" screen, pressing back would go nowhere.

I then went to playing now in the main interface, cleared anything from playing now and found I could not clear the WDM zone but that zone was not obviously active anyway. Theatre View was still stuck on playing now.

The only way to clear the state was to completely exit media centre and server and restart. Any ideas?

Strange. I'll try a wild guess  :)

Have you set up Theater View to load a specific zone ("switch to zone on load")? If so try setting it to No Change.

Also ... Have you set up a zone for WDM (IPC)? Are there any zone switch rules?

Just guessing but you should be able to clear the playing now zone just by hitting stop ... IF you are in the zone.  If it is in another zone, you are only controlling that one, not necessarily what is loaded in Playing Now (in a different zone).

Even if you don't use zone really, in the playing now window you can toggle them in Theater View. If it hangs on the back button hit ESC it beats exiting and restarting at least until you can figure this out.

no

yes, it switches on [Filename]=[live:////ipc" and stops playback in other zones

I think this explains it to some extent, I couldn't "stop" the WDM zone (e.g. clear from playing now). It was acting as if it was locked onto WDM. It's an intermittent random glitch so perhaps something flaky in WDM land?

It seems like this happens all the time now, reproducible by

- shut it all down
- open jriver
- go to theatre view
- go to playing now
- go back = takes me back to playing now

only way to escape at this point is to exit theatre view

next test

- remove the WDM driver as a selected feature
- close media centre and server
- repeat previous test

I can now use theater view playing now normally (i.e. can back out of it)

next test

- add the WDM driver back in as a selected feature but do not select it as the default device
- close media centre and server
- repeat previous test

last one

- close media centre and server
- set the WDM driver as the default device in windows
- repeat previous test

theater view playing now is borked again

These tests appear to demonstrate that the WDM driver breaks the Playing Now screen in 21.0.19

slightly bizarrely I don't seem able to delete playing now from theatre view

I can remove it from the config but opening theatre view still leads into that screen, it really wants me to go to playing now eh :D

a log file to illustrate this test

- removed the playing now option from theatre view
- open theatre view
- go to the movies roller
- select grid view
- it takes me to into the playing now black hole

I suppose reinstall jriver is the next step

a fresh installation doesn't change anything

as soon as jriver is the default audio device, playing now (and theater view as a whole) is essentially broken. This is a bit of a problem for my plan today which was "set up the PC so that my wife can use it for itvplayer and friends" !

the reinstall has restored playing now to theatre view

I think I've fixed it anyway though don't ask me why this appears to have fixed it. I ran through the "configure windows audio device" dialog (the one in the pic attached) for the jriver WDM device and now it seems to work fine (touch wood). I was quite careful to change one thing at a time here and retest each time and that is certainly the thing I changed that fixed it. Of course it's not impossible that something else changed under the covers but I wasn't aware of it if it did.

I've attached a log that records the same actions as the earlier log in case that helps.

I can see this line in the old log

   Line 5178: 0184593: 5244: TV: CTheaterViewFileInfoImage::Update: Position: Video\Movies\Grid\Playing Now\Display\Playing Now. Is TV guide false

which doesn't appear in the new one

There are no other obvious differences that I can see (albeit I don't know what I'm looking for other than differences).

Both seem to be trying to play the IPC device all the time though, I wonder if that is why theater view feels laggy?

You don't happen to to have theater view UI sounds turned on do you?  Because that would explain this behavior in spades.  Everytime you navigate a menu item, it would send a sound to the default audio device, triggering IPC, etc..

I couldn't tell from your answer above whether jump on play is entirely disabled, but I would verify that you don't have theater views UI sounds on by mistake.

hah well spotted :) I do have sound in theatre view turned on. I did have "jump on play (audio)" set to none but reinstalling jriver seems to have set that back to "playing now". This still doesn't explain, as far as I can see, why it started working after I configured the windows audio device though.

When something starts working, and you don't understand why, the best course is often to walk quietly away.
