UPnP Server 1.0.8 for Media Receivers
« on: January 27, 2005, 04:31:58 pm »

MC's UPnP Server is available here:
http://www.jriver.com/~gateley/server_upnp.mjp

Changes and fixes
1. Philips Streamium will now display pictures.
2. SSDP Search for device type now works, possibly more devices recognized now.
3. Service Descriptions and Eventing now work, possibly more devices recognized.
4. Option to disable NOTIFY warnings

--------------------------------------------------------

Instructions for using the UPnP Server
Click on Plug-ins in MC's tree, then on UPnP Server.  On the right side of the UPnP Server page, set "Options" and then click on "Start" to start the server.

If a media receiver is already on the network, and the server is started, the receiver should pick up the server right away. When a media receiver is first turned on, if the server is already started, the receiver should pick up the server. Some receivers may not do both correctly, so try both.

If you cannot see your view scheme, make sure that:
1) The View Scheme is selected to Show in Theater View (under Edit View Scheme).
2) The View Scheme is a child of "Audio", "Images" or "Video".

Options
You can convert files to MP3 as they are streamed.  See Options on the UPnP page.

If you have multiple network interfaces on your computer, such as an ethernet and a bluetooth interface, you may need to specify the IP address the UPnP server uses (it will only listen on a single interface, and may choose the one the device is not on).

Unless you are reporting log information here, you can turn off many warings by unchecking "Warn on unrecognized NOTIFY".

Checkboxes are available for two special cases:

1.  The NETGEAR Genre Hack is required for the NETGEAR MP101, and possibly others. It replaces blank genres with "Unknown" genres. The MP101 will otherwise refuse to play tracks with blank genres.

2.  The SMC/Terratex URL Hack is required for the SMC EZ Stream and the Terratec Noxon. These receivers cannot handle complex URLs (internal to the protocol) and this hack changes the URLs to simpler ones.

A log is generated on the UPnP Server page in MC.  If you have a UPnP device that doesn't work, you can copy the log from MC's UPnP Server (under the tree/plug-ins) and paste it into a thread here.

I haven't looked at video for Streamium yet, but I will.

The ROKU is still not talking with me, I'm not sure why.

Still no luck with the Linksys WMLS11B. I no longer get any errors in my UPnP log - it just stops on "Received request for device description". The Linksys attempts to load the server for several seconds and then just sticks until I back out to the main menu.

Intel UPNP tools still not recognize this Server

Here another question already posted in 1.0.7 thread, but unreplied:
Quote
Where are the files stored that are transmitted to a UPNP Client? Because for the old Media Server, I installed MC on a saveable RAM-Disk on my server so that the HD didn't have to start up for only browsing the library, but only for playing files. I want to do so again for the UPNP Server, so please tell me which folder (and files) I have to put on that RAM-Disk.

Thanks

Raist,
Wherever your library database fies are.  Probably here:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\Data

You could do File/Library/Library Manager and set up a new library for this purpose, cloning it from the original.

My DLINK DSM-320 now correctly recognizes MediaCenter however, the system hangs when selecting a file to play.  The following is logged:

01/28/05 18:39:48 - Received request for service description
01/28/05 18:39:59 - Browse BrowseDirectChildren 0
01/28/05 18:40:01 - Browse BrowseDirectChildren Audio
01/28/05 18:40:03 - Browse BrowseDirectChildren Audio\All (46)
01/28/05 18:40:06 - Browse BrowseDirectChildren Audio\All (46)\A Perfect Circle
01/28/05 18:40:18 - Browse BrowseDirectChildren Audio\All (46)\A Perfect Circle\Mer de Noms

But the player hangs and I need to power cycle it to get it working.

Windows Media Connect works fine however I'd really like to get this working with MC.

What kind of file are you trying to play?  MP3?

Are you converting to MP3?  If so, do you have the MP3 encoder installed on the server?

Is it really that easy? Just the library folder. Because I remember for old Media Server, the zip file for transmission was always in MC's root directory, independent of the library folder. So I had to install MC on the RAM-disk, not only the library folder. I thought that MC creates some extra files for UPNP server like it did for old Media Server.

Thanks

I don't really know.  You'll have to experiment.  Check all the settings for File Locations.

Yes, MP3.  It also hangs trying to play a video or look at a picture so I doubt its the encoder.

The player hanging means that data is getting sent, but not in the format the player expects. A network sniff would really help me out, since the player is probably asking for a particular format. Try a WMA file (with MP3 conversion turned off), and a couple of other formats.
