Getting ASIO to work
« on: April 08, 2005, 11:47:33 pm »

I've recently try to use ASIO as output but I can't seem to get it to work no matter how. The soundcard that I am using is Terratec Aureon Space 7.1 and when I choose ASIO, no sound come out. I've try to route the output to all the channel, set the bitrate and sampling rate but still no dice.

Anybody got any idea?

I have Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 and it works perfectly. I can use Terratec's own ASIO driver and ASIO4ALL driver too.

I don't think your question has enough details about your setup. Could you tell more about it? If possible you could add screen shots of your Terratec control panel options.

Here are a couple of screenshots of my Terratec setting, Media Center setting and the diagnostic dialog of Media Center when I try to play using ASIO.

The thing is, when I try to play with the following settings, Media Center will play without any error but no sound will come out. In case you are wondering, I am using SPDIF out that's connected directly to an amplifier. I've tried changing the channel offset but still no dice. I've also set the sample rate to 48khz and output format to 24 bit. I've tried it with 16bit and also without changing the sampling rate but still no sound. I am not sure if ASIO will work with SPDIF out so if that's the problem then I will have to sheepishly say I am sorry. =)

Also, after I try to play using ASIO, when I try to play other Apps that uses the soundcard, a repetitive sound will occur and won't go away until I use Media Center to play through Direct Sound again. =/

I know it sound confusing but I am also confused by the behaviour of the ASIO too.

At first sight your settings look OK.

I can use all outputs with ASIO (analog and digital coax & optical). I can also passthrough 5.1 DTS wave files, but that needed ASIO4ALL driver. For some reason it didn't work with Terratec driver.

Perhaps you could try it: http://www.asio4all.com/.

You could also google something like this:  SPDIF ASIO "Terratec Aureon"

I'll check your images better tomorrow or so. I am a bit busy now with other things.

I've manage to get ASIO to work with ASIO4ALL but I still don't understand as to why the default Terratec ASIO driver won't work with Media Center. Oh well, just gotta use ASIO4All for now.

Thanks for the link!

I was about to post some more links since I didn't find any better answer. Sometimes Terratec drivers have been a bit buggy. That may be the cause of the problem this time too.

Here are the links I gathered:

Some Terratec driver versions:
Aureon 7.1 Space - Beta Driver and Software v. 5.20c:
http://supporten.terratec.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=327
Aureon 7.1 Space - Driver and ControlPanel v. 5.19d
http://supporten.terratec.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=179

An interesting thread about ENVY24 based soundcards at AVS forums:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=467b929b55dfe006b64dd7934fdd344b&threadid=364771&perpage=20&highlight=loud&pagenumber=1
You could also search for "Aureon" at AVS forums.

A nice review of Aureon Space:
http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/terratec-aureon71/

I am interested about this also because I am just about to order a Terratec Aureon Firewire soundcard. I am going to use it with my laptop on my second HiFi system. I am also going use it as an DA converter/Preamp between my digital HT amp and an analog amp in the second system.

The wiring distance between the units is about 12 m (~40 ft) and I think I will get better audio quality and simpler & cheaper wiring by doing it digitally. I have in my shopping cart also a Terratec Vice Versa optical/coax converter-repeater for keeping the signal quality good over the longish distance.

Have you tried a channel shift other than 0 in the media center playback panel.

While ASIO4all has its internal mapping to whatever device you need to direct to the correct output channels with the default driver. Try 2,4 etc. until you hit the S/PDIF interface.

Cheers
