Media Center 11 Slow
« on: April 29, 2005, 04:18:48 am »

By using media center 11 everyday i noticed that it is very slow in common in addition to:
  • Library Browser is very slow and its very noticable when scrolling up and down in the windows of the artists and album when having album art.
  • Restoring MC11 From notification area takes a long time while loading the the MC main window.

What build are you running?

I'm using the latest (251), and it's pretty sweet!

I also have this problem. All builds of MC11 that I have tried (including the newest one) are quite sluggish and overall much slower than MC10 used to be. Basic tasks like window re-rendering when switching views are sluggish, for example.

Right now it's skipping quite often, too. When this happens, it says in the status line "saving database". Can I stop that from happening?

MC should be quite snappy with even a large library on a modern machine.

Try using MC with an empty library.  Then import just a few of your files.  See if it makes a big difference.

Try disabling extra plugins that are running. (DSP, 3rd party, visualization, etc.)

Also, make sure your library is not on a network drive.

I agree with you Jim
but there is many programs on the market that deals with huge library of files in a fast and smooth way....
i hope j.river improves the speed of MC when dealing with large library

I offered some things to try to see why MC is slow.  It's not a problem everyone has, so there's something special about your setup.

Again, disable extra plugins and try a fresh library.

You need to isolate what causes the slowness for us to help.

I have a decent system and a small library (1800 files).  I only have the scrolling problem in the Library Browser ToMy00 mentioned, but I think it is due to my video setup. I see waves as a scroll; it is very jerky. Also, I have MC open large enough to show 3 columns of albums.

Radeon 9800 Pro 256
Monitor 1: Sony 22" LCD display, DVI-D: 1600 x 1200 x 32
Monitor 2: Generic Monitor, VGA: 1024 x 768 x 32

Media Center Registered 11.0.252 -- C:\Program Files\Media Center\

Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Intel Pentium 4 3173 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 2095 MB, Free - 1571 MB

If I was only using one monitor the scrolling might be better, but looking at my stats now I shouldn't have any video problems with MC. Strange ? ? ?

I Tried Using MC without any running Plugins with a:

  • Library of 1622 files: still slow spicially in media browser.
  • Library of 279 files: still the same results.

By the way my MC 251 Build crashes after importing files i don't know if that was fixed in the last build or not.

Some more info: I don't use any plugins. My music folder has about 13.000 files. Is that a lot or not? It's relative, so I can't say right now.

It's possible this is related to a video card driver or to DirectX.  Try updating both.

It's also possible that another program could be causing trouble.  Anything screen related running?

Even something like a virus checker.

I already use the latest DirectX and VideoCard drivers for my system.

I just ran a number of tests including disabling and enabling video in dxdiag; turning off my second monitor; Direct3D and Open GL performance.

Nothing changed this.

I did find that the problem for me was in my high resolution and how much of the LB I was showing. The more images shown, the greater the visual distortion. Also, the more images shown the slower I have to move the scroll bar in order to keep it smooth.

Normally I keep MC so it shows about 36 Albums.

If I shrink MC, so it only shows 20 @ 2 x 10 (20 Albums) things are very smooth no mater how fast I scroll. Additionally, in order to keep it smooth with 3 columns, I can only have 4 rows (12 Albums).

Sorry, but in light of what I just found I would like to request a customization option be implemented after the release of 11,  so I can show less columns in the LB and eliminate the visual distortion of scrolling.

This is not the solution!
MC has to be qualified to work smoothly with huge library contents!
i am not sure of this but can't MC developers try to add some display/video acceleration features to prevent the slow behavior of MC with large contents ?

Well, it may be a solution to a different issue. As I was trying to help pinpoint the problem that you are having, I came across this other problem that could use a solution... may be related to yours. As for yours, can you see if any of this is related?

Did you double-check your versions of DirectX and display drivers like JimH asked? When restoring, are you noticing slowness when maximizing to the LB or to a screen that only has text? Are you using any skin effects? What screen resolution are you running? Have you run a scandisk or defrag recently? Network or local library?

You can test MC 11's drawing speed by clicking a window and pressing Ctrl+Shift+T. (this is in there temporarily for internal testing)

With MC maximized, what results do you get for the list at the root of playlists?  What do you get at library browser?

Library browser at 1000x1000 takes around 150ms to redraw on my home machine.  Normal lists take around 70ms.

Library browser will be a little slower, but it's not fair to say "MC 11 is slower" because of this since previous versions didn't have library browser.

I know your point ... but for me? the best feature that is included in this new version of MC is Medial Library!
becouse i didnt see any program have this great feature... exploring your albums with its cover art!

i am recently have the latest version of all my PC components drivers!
any my screen resolution is high! but don't tell me to low it down if i need a speed improvment  :) !

Build 11.0.254 fixed my problems (at least the ones with MC ;D)

ToMy00, they changed the LB and enhanced the sampling of images. Have you tried this build? Do you notice any improvements?
