Schedule Library Backups?
« on: May 05, 2005, 03:49:11 pm »

Is it possible to use Media Scheduler to automate library backups?  I just lost a month's worth of changes to view schemes and playlists..

Hi,

It might well be possible using MediaScheduler to program a custom task that would start mjextman.exe (the command line version of MC) with the 'MCC_BACKUP_LIBRARY' parameter.

I'm going to test that and keep you informed.

That would be nice actually.

There's no "supported" way to do this currently, except to run import once in a while.

We may add auto-backup to the next version.

Well,

I added a Custom task in MC Scheduler with the following parameters :
Command Name: mjextman
Program Path: C:\Program Files\J River\MC 11\
Command Line: /MCC 20011

20011 is the code for MCC_BACKUP_LIBRARY.

It worked... but at the given time MC popped up the 'Save as' dialog for the library backup. So it's working but you have to be in front of your computer to click 'Save'.

So, maybe in next version for an automatic version....

Ciao,

Thanks very much - I thought my post had sunk without a trace!

it's working but you have to be in front of your computer to click 'Save'.

Well, at least it means that I won't forget, if there's a save dialogue waiting for me when I get back to the computer..

We may add auto-backup to the next version.

Oh, that would be great.. it would save me from myself!  :P

here's a great little (freeware) utility for doing this:

http://www.2brightsparks.com/

Poke around for the freeware version. SE is the pay version which does have some nice features.

I also use this to upload my "PlayingNow" file to my ftp site - VERY handy little tool.

Cheers!

Thanks WinoOutWest; I took a look at the site, but wasn't sure that SyncBack would be able to overcome the Cmagic problem of having to click 'Save' on a dialogue to complete the backup...  Can it do that?

It's been a while since I tried SyncBack, but it used to run unattended.  Another possibility is Cobian Backup.  As a backup program it's not as sophisticated as SynchBack, but I like its ability to keep a fixed number of copies of the library files  - handy if you backup your library after you've messed it up!

Yes keeping a number of backups is one of the features in the Full or Paid verison of Syncback.  And yes it runs attended - I use it to back up all my data files off several PCs in my home network.  Do you know if Cobian will backup up Open files as well?  SyncBack "paid" version will but not the freeware.
 Cheers!

I found this in the Cobian Backup forum - "In version 6, exclusively open fils will not be copied."  Version 7 is in development and will be able to handle open files (with caveats).
