MC11: sharing library via network drive slow
« on: May 19, 2005, 03:08:08 pm »

Hi!

I have 3 computers:

* One server that shares a folder containing the library files of MC
* One XP workstation with a mapped network drive to that shared dir
* Another XP workstation with a mapped network drive to that shared dir

Both workstations have MC11 installed and both use the same library on the shared folder of the server.
The mp3's are in a subdirectory of the shared folder.
On both workstations, the mapped drive is called Z:

When using only one workstation at a time everything is fine.
When starting up the second workstation, MC responds very slow on the second workstation when browsing through the library.

MC10 used to be perfecty fast in this setup. Never had any trouble with v10.

I know that I can use Media Server to share mp3's over a network, but I have reasons not to use that.

Questions:
* Is this speed issue by design?
* Is there a setting somewhere with which I can speed it up?
* If no, is this issue on the things to repair list?
* What causes this behaviour?

Besides this I believe that MC is the very best and I am using it for years already. Keep up the good work, and I will buy every new version that comes out!

Thanks!

Daniël

It's not safe to share a library with multiple machines at the same time.

My advice would be to keep a local library that points to the network files on each machine.  The new import system makes it simple to keep the libraries in step with one another.

I am currently using network shares instead of Library Server whenever I need to change my library in a way or another. Also, some file formats are not working with Library Server.

I have configured my three Media Center PCs so that the local libraries see the same mapped network drive letters and media folders. (Actually one of the PCs uses local drives, but I have substituted the drive letters.)

Because not all file formats can hold physical tags I have found that the best way to keep the local libraries on the three PCs up-to-date is to make a library backup whenever something has changed. It is a simple task to make a library restore from the latest backup when starting to use another PC. I just have to remember not to change anything without first loading the latest library.
