photo tagging - new standard emerging - XMP
« on: August 01, 2005, 11:00:20 am »

From another unrelated thread:

We'll revisit photo tagging after MC11 is released.

Coppermine will read and display IPTC and EXIF tags so we'll see if we can get one of these working.

My view is that you should READ and use EXIF to the maximum extent possible and offer a few utilities for resetting EXIF dates and times, but not focus much on editing EXIF.  EXIF should be used for the metadata associated with the camera and settings at the time a picture was taken.

IPTC was the standard for photo taker, copyright, topic, captions etc. but is now being supplanted by XMP a new extensible standard put forth by Adobe.  I am guessing XMP is very similar to the "custom" tagging that MC does now in that it is XML based.

Here is Adobe's page on it: http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp/main.html

My request (recommendation) is to migrate the MC tagging format to XMP and be fully XMP compliant.

Thanks!
Rob.
