MP3 Tagging- Don't Store In File Removes Tag!
« on: August 08, 2005, 10:37:48 pm »

I have my files tagged the way I like them. I don't want the name and current version of MC written to the files.

So, I go to Options-Library, and I uncheck "Store in file tags (when possible)" in the fields for the Audio Analyze fields and the Comment field.

I analyze a few files and when I look at the tags later, the fields I have marked have been removed from the files.

You can read that option either way. Don't write these fields (what I think) or "Erase these fields" I don't think any tags should be removed unless I choose to remove them.

I tried this quickly and couldn't reproduce. MC did not change or delete any of those tags after disabling file tag writing in the library field options. I tried some ogg and mpc files too.

It might help to reproduce this if you could:

1. Host a small MP3 file on your website. It should be pre-tagged using your usual tagging system.

2. Give exact step-by-step instructions how the bug can be reproduced. Start with a new empty library. That should eliminate possible differences in the library field options.

If you don't have a place to upload,  you can always send it to MC's gmail at mcfiles@gmail.com with instructions...

I guess Gary can host a file if needed. He has a website.

Easy.

To duplicate, simply disable writing these tags to the file (options-library-Store in file tags (when possible)) . Allow others to stay at defaults. I never add to the library fields, so they are as installed except for these.

Album Gain
BPM
Comment
Intensity
Peak Level
Replay Gain

Pick an MP3 (or several). Doesn't matter if it is imported to the library or simply dropped into Playing Now.
Analyze it.

On my system, the tags are now changed with some missing. All remaining tags have been rewritten. They are no longer in the same order as before the the file was analyzed. Actually, it seems only the ID3V2 comment is removed. The size of the V2 tag remains the same.

Here is an MP3 before MC analyzes it:

Here is the same file after MC analyzes it:

Hmm... I did about the same steps you described, except that my files did not have foreign tags (to MC). There was an error in my procedure, though. My test files were analyzed previously in MC. I guess that made MC to use a "no changes needed" mode because the new values did not differ. I will retry.

I finally had some time to retry this. I added a virgin library. I went to options and disabled file tag writing in the Comment field and track analysis fields. I used an MP3 file that had similar tags with the Gary's file.

I analyzed the file and changed the Comment and Name library field contents too. MC wrote only the new Name tag. Otherwise the file was unaltered.

After that I added the MC field "People" to my view and filled something. The People field uses the tag type "COMM (People)". MC couldn't write the info to the file. I went to options and re-enabled file tag writing in the Comment field. After that I updated the file tags and MC wrote the Comment, People and MC "Tool" tags.

So I couldn't reproduce the behavior when tag writing was disabled in the Comment field. However, it seems because MC uses multiple ID3v2 (COMM) file tags for adding proprietary tags it will always overwrite all previous (COMM) tags when the main Comment field is allowed to write. It seems also that MC cannot write any proprietary tags to files if the main Comment field is not allowed to write to files. (MC 11.0.311)
