Ext. HDD opening as G: when MC11 want it to be F:
« on: October 19, 2005, 05:15:00 pm »

So I have two external harddrives, and an iPod, which you might consider to be an external harddrive.

All my mp3s are on external harddrive #1 - when I switch it on, it's opening up as Drive G:

It always used to open as F: but not now for some reason.

My problem: MC is set up to play from the F: drive, the paths of all the tunes in MC are F:/whatever/whatever, which means I can't play off the external HDD.

Anyone got any idea how to trick the Ext. HDD into being F: or what's the best move here?

Is the letter F free or is it used by some other device?

If your OS is XP or W2k you can change the drive letters in the Windows Control Panel. The OS usually remembers the letters unless you install new drive devices at a moment when the previously installed drive devices are not connected.

One possibility is to use the dos command "SUBST". It can assign a drive letter to any folder.

Another solution is to change the library. You can use the Find and Replace tool for replacing all F:\ instances with G:\ in the folder paths. (Check only the "Filename (path)" field in the tool options.)

If Win2K or XP, then open Control panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, under Storage click on Disk Management, right click the partition and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.

If you want to swap the names of F: and G:, then
1. Rename F: as something temporary like Z:
2. Rename G: as F:
3. Rename Z: as G:

What NickM Said Will Work The Best To Order The Drives The Way You Want Them To Come Up All the Time.
