Ratings? Media Center unique?
« on: December 11, 2005, 03:45:01 pm »

Hi,

Over the past few weeks i've gone through and applied rating scores (you know 1*--> 5*s) to a large number of songs. However, i've noticed that these arn't transferable to other programs. Im guessing that Media Center doesn't use totally standard ID3 tags...

..and if this is the case are there any utilities out there to convert the Media Center tags (im only really interested in the ratings) to normal ID3.

Thanks!

Popularimeter (ID: POPM) seems like the logical place to start, even if it's not explicitly a "rating" so much as a "quality" indicator.  Still, it's a place to stash the data if you need to.

If ID3V2.4 were used, I'd think
4.17.   Popularimeter
Would be a good choice.
<Header for 'Popularimeter', ID: "POPM">
     Email to user   <text string> $00
     Rating          $xx
Counter         $xx xx xx xx (xx ...)

Using 2.4 would allow many tags to be 'standard', but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

Musicmatch stores the rating information as a COMM tag

So Does MC11

the tag comm name for MusicMatch i think is "MusicMatch_Raiting" (i forgot)

the comm tag MC11 uses is "Raiting"

I would think that is a better tag name since it is not branded with the "MusicMatch" Name

It does seem rather silly that ID3 has no standard rating tag, but that's not a situation that we can readily fix.

Comment fields are fine, as long as the software/hardware we use can be configured to properly interpret the information stored within them.  I'm guessing, though I don't really know, that Musicmatch and Media Center ratings don't translate between the two pieces of software.

The thing I'd love to see, though I'm not sure whether or not it's possible, is the ability to link library fields to specific ID3 tags.  Not the ones already standardized, but ones that don't have a standard or ones that are created by the user.  Of course, I'm not a programmer, so I don't know just how complex that request would be.

mc does this already to a point with a few fields to read some of music matchs fields.

It can be done

maybe a user tag edit area where the user can fine tuen some tags and point them to MC's tags.

i think it was in MC9 where j river created there own id3 tags and programs should read them but most programs hardwire there tags. there can be like 256 comm (comment) tags but most programs read the first one and stop (Dr. Tag Can Read them).

And thus the idea of using a 'standard'. Even if you are the only one who uses it. At least there is a chance that other apps and devices would be able to make use of the tags.
