Record Stream with MC12.102
« on: October 29, 2006, 08:03:58 am »

I set the scheduler to records 15 minutes of stream (mms://wm2.xs4all.nl/streamgate46).
It indicates it starts, running and being finished.
But I can not find any output.?
The directory in options > file locations > "output file location (ripping and recording) does not show any file.
Also not the directory "temporary file location".
I have the feeling that nothing was recorded .....

Are there people who got this working?

I didn't get anything either, as I mentioned in the .102 thread.

 :D ;D Perhaps it just sends a report to the RIAA? ? :D :'(

The files should show up in the music directory, on my computer, that's  My Documents\My Music

It should also show up in the library, in the recently imported list.

I guess the more logical place to put the file is in the output file location, assuming that's different than the music directory (for me it's the same).

You could try a folders search of the file. The filename should be the name you used in the schedule box. The extension should be the resulting play format (.mp3 or .wma), NOT a playlist extension (.m3u or .pls). At last resort the extension becomes (.dat).

:D ;D Perhaps it just sends a report to the RIAA? ? :D :'(

Only indirectly. Via Homeland Security. :D :D :D :-X

JimN.
Can't find anything!
Can you give a example of a stream that you recorded with MC12.102?
I will try again with that.

The stream I tried (mms://wm2.xs4all.nl/streamgate46) is WMA format.
Is that a problem maybe?

Yes, that turns out to be the problem. For the time being, WMA streams can't be scheduled. Nor will RealAudio streams. MP3 streams will be the only ones that can be scheduled for now. Here's one I've been trying, but I think most ShoutCast streams should work:

http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=2891&file=filename.pls

I've only had success with playlist extensions in the stream address, either pls or m3u. I've had no luck with an mp3 extension.

I also see weird times with successful recordings. I've only tried things for a minute so far but I see the following. In the scheduler window a successful recording will often show divergent times, usually shorter. The actual files usually run over or may show no time at all until played. The bit rate is also odd, usually displaying a little bit higher than when actually played.

I take it this is actually saving the mp3 as it is streamed? Rather than recording the sound of the stream as it is played?

It seems as if the resulting file ends up in the My Music folder in My Documents even though I set the location to be elsewhere in Options >> File Locations >> Output File Location (ripping and recording). Is this a bug?

Is there any possibility that MC can populate the file name or tags with artist/title info sent by the station?

I recorded an mp3 stream last night. Worked well. Problem is, I had no idea that it was actually recording until i tunred on my pc today and saw that MC had imported the file. I didnt see any recording message, or nothing in playing now. And schedular just said "finished" after the time of the beginning of the recording passed. I would expect it to say "running" or "recording" or something instead.

Yes, I found that any mp3 stream with "~~~stream~~~.mp3" didn't work. Should be fixed in the next build.

I also see weird times with successful recordings. I've only tried things for a minute so far but I see the following.

Try recording for greater the 1 minute. There seems to be a quirk in that a 1 minute record time is kind of signal for the schedule play indefinitely. In any case, recording for just one minute doesn't seem to work properly, if at all. I certainly think it's something we have to change/fix.

I take it this is actually saving the mp3 as it is streamed? Rather than recording the sound of the stream as it is played?

That's correct. However, in getting wma and other streams to record, we will be implementing recording it as it played (in the background). We also plan on implementing a feature that let's you start recording when you are playing a stream.

It seems as if the resulting file ends up in the My Music folder in My Documents even though I set the location to be elsewhere in Options >> File Locations >> Output File Location (ripping and recording). Is this a bug?

Yes. Should be right in the next build.

Is there any possibility that MC can populate the file name or tags with artist/title info sent by the station?

That's a possiblity. But is seems to be of limited use if the stream is say an hour long, but only the first song title (which probably started in the middle) is used. A neat feature would be the ability to select out and save a particular song out of the recorded stream. However, I can't say whether we will actually be implementing this.

Thanks for your testing and input.

After the recording is finished, the title should show up in the recently imported list. If you are recording for only 1 minute, try a longer period.

MC 12.107

10. Fixed: Scheduled MP3 streams with "~~~stream~~~.mp3" didn't record.
11. Fixed: Scheduled record streams is now placed in Output File Location instead of Music Directory.

Both work. Great.

Small bug.
I recorded 5 minutes.
The mp3 is indeed 5 minutes long.
The tag 'duration' shows 12 seconds though.

I tried to record this WMA stream:
mms://wm2.xs4all.nl/streamgate46
I scheduled 5 munites with 'start now' option.
It created a file 0f 5kB. Playing this shows some buffering. After that it ends.

So something is wrong ....

[Quoted from the Media Center 110 thread]

I tried this stream and it worked for me. It looks like it started to record but ran into some problem. Could you try it a few more times (you only need to record 1 minute) and see if the results vary, ie file size?

Has anyone else tried this or another WMA stream?

Thanks,
JimN

The same result:
I scheduled 1 munite with 'start now' option.
It created a (.wma) file 0f 5kB. There is nothing in it.
