Using 5.1 Output Format Causes My MC to Crash
« on: December 07, 2006, 04:41:22 pm »

Quoting My Self
I've just attached a surround system to my computer.
I've set MC to 5.1 Surround, but Cloning each channel, so we can have music
at both ends of our computer room.
I'm still trying to figure exactly what's causing it, but
I think it's everytime MC changes track, I get a Run Time Error,
terminating MC.

Edit: It's not changing track, it's changing Albums (And/Or Stopping).

Is anyone else using this, with or without difficultys?
It's great while it works, but it seems to die instantly
an album is finished.  It doesn't matter whether it's in clone mode
or JRSS Surround Mode.

Edit:  Learnt More...
If I start MC then select 2 Channels,
then play, then stop
Then select 5.1 Channels then play, then stop,
It's fine.

If I start MC with 5.1 channels already selected,
MC crashes with a Run Time error when the Album stops.

I'd test on another machine but I've not got
one here at this moment.

Exactly the same happens here. After installing the 129 build MC crashed whenever I pressed the Stop, Next, etc buttons. First I thought that playback engine was totally broken, but then I realised that I had enabled 5.1 (clone) and forgot to change it back.

If you switch back to 5.1, does it still crash, or is it only the first time before the settings get changed?

Thanks.

Thanks, Mr ChriZ

If you switch back to 5.1, does it still crash, or is it only the first time before the settings get changed?

It crashes only if the "5.1 (clone)" mode is selected on startup and not changed before playback.

If I change the mode to "source number of channels" immediately after startup (before playing anything), play a track or two and then switch it back to "5.1 (clone)" mode MC works normally from that point on. After that it does not crash when I press the Stop or Next buttons. (I didn't try the other channel options.)

Here's a log if it helps anything. During this log I started playback, played the track 15 seconds and tried skip to the next track. At this point MC crashed.

I'm not able to reproduce this.

Any other hints?  Equalizer state, effects, cross-fading, etc.?

Hmm....
No other dsp/equalizer stuff is turned on
Two different sound cards, same occurs with both.
Crossfading is set to gapless playback.
I've tried removing all plugins.
Same occurs with Mp3 library vs ape library.
It's quite persistant.

I'm not able to reproduce this.

Any other hints?  Equalizer state, effects, cross-fading, etc.?

- Gapless playback mode
- "Do not play silence..." disabled
- Internal volume (not maximized)

DSP ON=
- 24-bit output, 5.1 (clone, SW 80 Hz)
- Volume Leveling: Album, Adjustment: Automatic based on current playlist, Clip protection

DSP OFF=
- everything else (inc. sample rate, eq, effects)

The problem is similar with two different sound cards:
- Terratec DMX6 fire 24/96, ASIO & Direct Sound & Wave Out (I tried all output modes)
- Integrated C-Media CMI 9739A, Direct Sound

We haven't been able to reproduce this after trying 5 different machines.

We start MC, play a song, hit stop. (or next, or let it finish)

Is it every-time or only sometimes?  Third-party plugins?  Any other clues?

Thanks.

Think I've got it sussed.
I had the Tempo Plugin installed, even though it's not in use.
I uninstalled it and the problem stopped instantly.

It happens always when the channel option is not touched after startup (i.e. not changed from 5.1 clone).

I have the "Tempo & Pitch" plugin installed too (unused). Actually, I thought that it is part of the default installation, but perhaps I just don't remember installing it.

It's uninstallable from the Plugin Manager under DSP.

Uninstalling it fixed the problem.

So, please fix the plugin or at least make it truly inactive when not selected in the DSP options. Tempo & Pitch is a nice toy. IMHO, it should be a default feature.

Good find.

BTW, no audio is passed through a disabled plugin.  However, disabled plugins still get issued some commands (like create, destroy, set audio format, flush, etc.) and 5.1 is causing an issue in the flush command for the rate plugin.

I agree.  This is a feature that is not just useful for "amusement" purpsoses (although it's certainly a nice toy for that.)  I also use it to speed up the playback of certain speech recordings in order to find certain specific sections of long programs.  In other words, it's really does have some "real world" value.

Thanks,

Larry
