Problem with last.fm submissions: BADAUTH
« on: February 06, 2008, 05:29:16 pm »

I am using the most current build of Media Center 12 (12.0.428) and the last.fm plug-in [1.0.0.8]. The last.fm plug-in seems to be unable to submit tracks to last.fm. This problem just seems to have started last night. After clicking on the plug-in in Media Center the log which shows the list of the tracks submitted. A red X shows in the left of the "When Submitted" column and the phrase "BADAUTH" in the "last.fm response" column for each track submission attempt. The only thing I changed in Media Center was that I added the Playing Now plug-in. Though when I noticed this problem the first thing I tried doing was uninstalling the Playing Now plug-in but that didn't solve the problem. I also tried reverting back to the last three builds of Media Center 12, but that didn't help either. I'm kind of a loss as to what is going on.

Here is an example of what shows up in the last.fm StatusLog.txt file.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem, or has anyone else experienced this in the past and have a solution? I'm just starting to get kind of frustrated with this.

no problems here.

Have you checked that your login details are correct?
Do you have any other last.fm application running? In your system tray perhaps?

it's a common problem by all accounts... try googling for last.fm badauth, you'll get more than 10 pages of hits.

The Last.fm plug-in for MC on their site didn't work unless you were logged in.

You could try posting in the PlayingNow thread here.  RhinoBanga is the expert on both.

My login details were correct. And I didn't have any other last.fm applications running.

After googling the problem and finding out it had something to do with the login details being incorrect, I have a brainwave... I had recently changed my last.fm password. So I wondered, "What would happen if I changed my password on the last.fm website?"

I changed my password back to the old one, entered it into in the last.fm plug-in, and now it's working again.

err... apparently I spoke too soon. It only submitted my queue of songs that had built up and stopped submitting again.

Does any of that make sense to anyone?

I'm still having the same problem. I've tried changing my password on the last.fm site a couple of times. After doing so I updated my password in the plugin and restarted MC. Still wouldn't submit. Then I'd change my password on the site and the plugin back to the original one and restart MC. Then the plugin submits the songs in the queue, but won't submit anything after that.

This seems like a very strange behaviour to me. Is this a problem with MC, the plugin or last.fm? I did upgrade my PC's RAM the day before this problem started. But, I really don't see that being the problem. I suppose I could try uninstalling and re-installing MC... Though I am reluctant to do so because I don't want to lose my view settings.

Is there anybody else experiencing a similar problem to this?

It does work:

There were two plug-ins.  Are you using the one that comes with MC12?  The old one on their site did not work right.

I'm pretty sure i've been using the one that comes with MC12. It's v1.0.0.8, if that helps.

It looks like last.fm have done something at their end as audioscrobbler plugins for other players are experiencing the same issue:

I'll keep investigating.

It seems okay now. After reinstalling windows on a new hd after a drive died on me and installing MC12.0.432. I'm not sure if one of those two events did it or if the folks at last.fm fixed something on their servers.

Others are reporting problems similar to yourself:

It's all related to your password apparently.   Does your password contain any non ASCII characters?   Is it very long?   Try changing it to 6 characters in the a-z range and see how you get on with that.

I was getting the BADAUTH problem.

that seems to have gone away but now I have a new error - just says:

"FAILED Plugin Bug: not all request parameters are set - No POST parameters"

It worked for the first song and then failed after that.

Any ideas??

Please excuse the ignorance but I don't know where to find the log file.

The tracks seem to be submitting now after loading MC12 again, so maybe the problem has gone away.

Changing my password to fit those parameters seems to have done the trick for me.

Thanks!

Seems to be a last.fm issue that is still there.

The temp fix is to "change" your pw to the same on last.fm every time you get the badauth error. works for me, hope they fix it soon!

I also had the problem with BADAUTH for 2 days.
(Didn't work for Saturday and Sunday submitted from germany).
I changed the password but this didn't help.

Today, without changing anything, the queue got submitted.

So I think it was a last.fm issue.

The last.fm spec has flood protection built in.   When you connect you get an acknowledgment back stating how long you should wait before sending the track details (usually one second).   The plugin honours this and sends each track individually so each track will "pause".
