Installation Problem - Win 7 64 bit -SSD
« on: November 15, 2009, 02:03:04 pm »

I am getting these incomprehensible screens when I run the installer and finally an error dialog box.

I am a registered licensed purchaser of MC14 who recently upgraded his computer from Vista 32 to Win7 64 and added 2 SSD drives in Raid 0(OS+games) (also have 2 X SATA II HD in Raid 1 for apps and storage)
Everything was setup perfect in Vista now cant even get the install screen up correctly to install MC14. The OS upgrade was a clean fresh install on a blank HD and I have been reinstalling my applications and everything has been installing and running correctly
My AntiVirus is Avast pro and I disabled it and tried re-running the install to no avail. I am logged in as Administrator.

Here are the screens I am seeing.

Any Ideas?

Thanks
Thomas

What language is your system configured to use?  It looks like the installer is automatically selecting a corrupt translation.  The user-submitted Czech translation was broken for a few builds and was fixed in build 95.  If you're not set to English, maybe you could make the switch and see if it makes a difference.

I installed on Windows 7 x64 to a freshly upgraded firmware on a Falcon SSD and the only strange thing was all these random folder (none that I would have selected) were already selected in Auto-Import and I had not done a library restore. I was kind of looking around the room, it spooked me.

I'm using Windows 7 and MC14 on a Kingston 64GB Solid State Drive very successfully.  The only issue I noticed was on one reboot, scan disk appeared, so since I hadn't really set it up at that point, I just reformatted and reinstalled everything again.  I haven't seen this issue since then.

I am set to English and I have downloaded the correct English Installer version.

Who do I contact to get my money back since it looks like no one has a solution for me :(

It isn't refundable.  We offer a 30 day trial to allow you to decide so we don't offer refunds.

If you will be patient, it's nearly certain that we can find the cause.

What build are you using?  Check under the MC Help menu.

I just noticed the SSD part.  Try installing to a drive other than the SSD.  Just as a test.

The latest build is at the top of this board.

I can not even get past the installer to choose what drive to install as soon as I run the program I get the errors you see in the screenshots.

I used the latest stable build.

Are you installing FROM the SSD?  This has got to be a hardware problem.

Try using the uninstall first.

Exactly how do you figure its a hardware problem?

I have installed 30+ apps since I have rebuilt my system with no problems.

Here is a 30 sec video of the problem I am having from beginning to end.

Maybe its the installer? Do you have a zipped version?

Thanks

I doubt strongly whether it could be MC.  Other people would see it.

Did you try uninstalling?  Remove the MC program directory from Explorer if necessary.

The big difference in your setup is the SSD.

I am running MC on 32-Bit Windows 7 on a SSD and it works great!  I must admit, in general, I do see an increase in those strange errors where you get the impression the data wasn't 100% perfect--which I have only seen at the tail end of HDD life.  Either way, there is a noticeable increase in thumbnail speed--all the data needed is just there when it's needed.  I'm only using 32-Bit because of two reasons:

1. My remotes (Keyspan) don't work with 64-Bit
2. I only have two licenses of each version so I reserve the 64-bit copies for my workstations.

netplanet,

Since the problem seems to appear immediately after the installer package has been more or less successfully extracted to your temp location you could try decompress it manually and run the installer from a different location.

Uncompress the MediaCenter140106.exe file to a new folder with 7-zip and run the install.exe file from that folder.

Thank You Alex. Using 7zip as you suggested fixed the install problem and I was able to install onto the SSD drive successfully and everything seems to be working well.

So in case others have problems with the installer similar to mine the fix was to use 7Zip(or another program) and extract everything to the non SSD Drive and then run the install executable there. I was able to install the application itself on the SSD drive.

I don't think the problem is directly caused by the used drive technology. It is more likely related to the file security on your system. Something is preventing the installer from either decompressing all files to your temp location or running the installation procedure correctly from there.

It's almost as if the write to the disk hasn't completed before the read has begun.

I had an early model SSD that was pitifully slow in writing, but could read fast.

So it might be caching the write and not quite verifying the write completed before trying to read the data?  Interesting.  The drives I'm using are the 64GB Kingston which were quite a deal at $125 or so.  After I bought I think the price dropped another $20.  There was a rebate in both cases.  They seem to offer a nice speedup over a standard HDD.

Exactly.  A driver problem.

The weird thing as i mentioned is that all the other application installer programs worked fine. It could be a conflict with a driver  or other conflict but still very unusual. SSDs are still a relatively new technology to the mass market so I am not surprised their were some problems.
