Possible Bug - Theater View, All items
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:40:17 am »

Ok, so I'm in Theater View, Audio. I have a custom list field called Artists to allow me to see multiple entries in the Artist field. This works fine, so if I have a track with the Artist field of "Tom Jones: The Cardigans", and I have a view which starts with a top level of Artists, I see entries for both Tom Jones, and The Cardigans. Excellent, so far so good.

The View then has a second level of Album. Again this is working well, and all albums are shown, as well as the "All Albums" item. I can query each of the individual albums, and the contents are shown.

BUT, if there is more than one album, and I select "All Albums", only some of the tracks area shown. Specifically, any track where the Artist name is not the only item in the Artists tag is ignored.

For example,

If I have 2 albums containing tracks by Tom Jones, and one of the tracks has an Artist tag of Tom Jones; The Cardigans

Using my Artists/Albums query above, and selecting Tom Jone, I get

All Albums (2)
Album 1
Album 2

If I select Album 2 (containing the Tom Jones; The Cardigans track) I can see all the tracks on the Album

If i select All Albums, all of the tracks on Album 1 are listed, and all of the tracks on Album 2, EXCEPT the one featuring the Cardigans.

If all of the tracks on an album are multiple artists, none appear on the All Albums list, but the Albuim itself is still shown, and counted under the all albums item.

Sorry if this is a bit detailed

im also using something as artists, and tried to replicate the problem, but for me it seems to be working fine. added an artist to one track of an album, that track still shows up when going artists>all albums. are you on the latest version, and did you add something special to the view?

I'm on 106, but it's been there for a while.

Theres nothing clever about the query, or the custom field. I've just replicated it on my test set-up, with manufactured data, and its exactly the same. Are you in Theater View. I've never tried it in standard view

Just tried it in standard view, and the problem is even worse. For the extra artist, the album does not even in a panes view, Artists/Album, and the tracks do not show up for either artist  even under the specific album, never mind All Albums.

Fancy some screenshots?

yes, i did it in thv. the only difference i see is the name for the field i use: artiesten. and i have no rules in the rules for file diplay or the root views, except telling its audio. im puzzled, especially because it is missing when you are in all albums, but not when you click the seperate albums, just maybe a stupid suggestion, but when you use an other name then artists? maybe mc gets confused with the plural of the artis field?
also in standard view it works for me, i have been using the setup as you for a long time now with a lot of albums using double names seperated by ;.
so im wondering if there is a small difference somewhere. have you checked that the artists field is still a list field.. heard of a field that was list and got reset to standard just recently.

OK, created a new field called Martist, and a new query Martist>Album

Exactly the same results as before. Small problem in Theater View, bigger problem in Standard view.

Several screenshots attached, showing the Album, with all tracks, etc
Then standard view Martist>Album, showing tracks missing from the album.
Definition of Martist field
Theater view shots showing 2 albums at Martist level, and tracks from only one artist under All Albums (you'll have to trust me about the rest of the tracks....)

Problem is repeatable, and I have one machine running XP. the other W7. Isn't just this album, happens to all albums with this data combination.

I'm being really stupid here, but I can't seem to attach anything. Under Additional Options all I get is

 Additional Options...
Notify me of replies.  Lock this topic.
 Return to this topic.
 Don't use smileys.

On the buttons, if I insert image, I get

I've tried copy/pasting files, bits of images etc.

that makes a lot clear stricko, first of all, i would not call it a list type field, but a calculated field. so there is the difference with my setup. now i think there is a solution also.
in the martist library field, first set the field to user data and choose list, close the library field manager and the options, now go the the same library field again and choose calculated data, see if that helps.
here are two threads which are about a similar isue.

let me know if it helps or if its unclear.

edit, i just tested it and made two screenshots to make it more clear.. i think it is a bug, but in the way you have to set the datatype. its nice that you can set the datatype, but it could be a bit more intuitive (and that is an understatement). it can be an important setting for list, decimal and integer type of calculated fields.

Excellent, works a treat. I'd never have thought about doing that.

But it does give me some ideas about things I can try with other fields.

Many thanks
