Gizmo data usage...
« on: October 20, 2010, 12:17:46 pm »

I am considering purchasing an Android smartphone for JRiver's Gizmo app music streaming feature.

I have a huge concern with upgrading to a with my current carrier AT&T, their new data plans put a max 2gb cap on usage; from most reports daily music streaming could hit this cap pretty fast. How much bandwidth does streaming lossless or 320kbps mp3s require?

Can you just calculate this, ie 2gb = 2097152kb, 2097152kb streaming at 320kbps yeilds about 110 min?

T-mobile seems to be the only major carrier left with unlimited data plans, does anybody on the forum have experience with this carrier? G2 looks like a great smartphone...

Gizmo currently uses MP3 at 128 kbit/second, which is 16 KB/second = 56.3 MB/hr

So 2GB is about ~35.6 hours.

You can also use Wifi whever you're in range to save data usage.

OK, I got bits and bytes confused in my earlier computer math...

Gizmo currently uses MP3 at 128 kbit/second, which is 16 KB/second = 56.3 MB/hr

So 2GB is about ~35.6 hours.

You can also use Wifi whever you're in range to save data usage.

It's very helpful to know this information as I look for a good data plan.

Thanks for your reply, Matt.
