Wav Meta Data
« on: June 19, 2011, 08:55:44 pm »

Hi

With Media Center 16.0.111 for Windows.

After following:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WAV_%26_AIFF_Tagging

...and editing a tag (artist and title) for a WAV file the values persist for JR Media.
However if I go to the file in Windows Explorer, right click, properties, Details... No changes are made.
Trying to get this so it shows up in Windows Media Centre.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Alex

Do you have MC configured to write tags back to files?   Search "changes" in Options and you'll see "Update tags when file info changes".

Thanks MrC.
This is an additional step after following the procedure as outlined in my original post (hyperlink)?

Much appreciated...!

I updated the wiki page for future reference.

Thanks that was helpful :)

However that setting is set by default it appears. I tried unticking, saving and ticking again and saving...  just in case... no luck...
Wondering if this can be reproduced with the original steps supplied?

(nb removing the tag for the file does not seem to do anything for Windows Explorer file meta data either).

Thanks

Stepping back, why are you using WAV files vs. another lossless compression format?

At the time I believed you could not go wrong with WAV as everybody supports it. Getting a lossless compression format that all apps use effectively, e.g. blackberry, Media Player, Media Centre, JR seem to be a tall order. Looks like I may need to reconsider something else, looks like JR may handle the conversions for me if this is the case...

Thanks Matt

Yup understand the concept of lossless compression (vs lossy) however my Blackberry only supports:

    MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 Layer 3 (.mp3)
    AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ (.m4a or .aac)
    MIDI (.mid or .smf)
    AMR-NB (.amr)
    WAVE (.wav)
    Windows Media Audio (.wma)
WMAPro - 16 bit, stereo output configuration (.wma), version 9+10

So no APE/FLAC :(
Looks like I'm forced into WMA lossless :(

At the end of the day then logic prevails that good old WAV is the way... but it seems the meta tagging support sucks. In defence of JR, it appears this situation is everywhere, so if JR supported meta data/wav correctly it could gain some customers :).... and it looks like they may have a head start.

CORRECTION! Blackberry now supports FLAC it seems :), but it is not documented. Does anyone know how well tags work with this format?
Looking at the encoder settings quality is from 6 to 8, I don't see how that works with lossless compression (or does 8 = lossless?).
Then there is the 4k padding block/seek table/ogg options - not sure what they do.

Cheers...

Remember you can always create a converted set of lossy files for those portable devices where you'll not notice the audio difference on those tiny ear buds.

Regarding your questions about FLAC, tags work fine in FLAC.  I'm thinking you might be wondering if you'll see the tags in Windows Explorer?   I don't see them in Win 7's Explorer; there are available in Directory Opus, so I haven't bothered to look for possible windows add-ons to make the tags available to Explorer.

Thanks. These are all sensible points worthy of consideration.

In conclusion.

1) Enhancement request - Still Wav/meta tag support needs to be tightened.
2) Trivial UI Bug for your tracker - Please change "quality" to "compression ratio" within the UI, at least for lossless codecs (misleading).
3) Enhancement request - Please indicate which is high and which is low compression for codecs (a slidebar widget could help here), numbers mean nothing to the average Joe (although they still should be displayed if relevant).

Cheers :)
