DVD iso's slow to start, why?
« on: August 06, 2011, 04:34:31 pm »

Why is it that it almost appears to lock JRiver up when starting a ripped DVD iso from HD?

To be clear, it works well, but it takes patience... click a movie, and it is not until at least 1 to 2 full minutes have passed until the first Video image appears. It runs faster straight from a DVD, which makes little sense as my hard drives are much faster. During this wait one can still use the computer, but try using jriver and a windows warning pops saying that jriver is no longer responding... then the movie starts...

I am sure there is some technical explanation for it. A

Hi - I was a big supporter of using ISO for a long while (I'm now tending to recommend storing and importing the ripped DVD and Blu-ray structure).  My ISO mount and play just fine on my setup (and this is over a Network) within say something like 10-20sec I guess (never timed).  Any way, MC does not have a ISO Parser built in so the process is:
1) In MC you "play" the ISO --> MC actually run the ISO with you PC's default ISO Mounting Prog
2) I use Virtual Clone Drive (VCD) and it mounts the Disc within a few seconds
3) If you run a prog like AnyDVDHD in the background it also needs to scan the disc and do its thing (and this can take a while on some discs)
4) The ISO is not "mounted" and available to Windows as a New Disc in the virtual Drive
5) Windows AutoPlay "sees" the new disc and plays the disc in MC16

Thanks for your answer JMone. Very insightful actually. So, since my blazing fast PC is not the issue here and it sounds like my set up is not much different than yours, perhaps using VCD is what I need to do to speed things up. I do indeed have anydvdhd running in the background as well. I will try that and report back!

ok, installed VCD and then updated jriver to the latest version (was a week or so behind). Learning more about this problem.

I double click the .IFO file that is created with a newly ripped DVD in jriver and now (with the latest update) the playback screen appears, and it sits there with a *LOCATING notification for a long time. VCD does not mount anything and DVDAnywhereHD is not scanning anything.

what could this be? what is JRiver Locating? the .VOB file in the directory for that DVD?

I click on a .VOB file directly, and it has the same *LOCATING thing going for a long while...

thanks for any answers or explanations. Learning as I go!

* VCD will only be used if you are using ISO (it mounts the ISO as a Virtual Drive).
* On my PC, if I double click on IFO file then it plays instantly, I'm not sure what the *LOCATING msg is unless it is part of the process where MC downloads and installs the latest filters after an upgrade (does MC have access to the Internet?).  Does the *LOCATING msg ever go away? Also is the DVD rip on a local drive?

Interesting to read that your IFO files instantly play. Mine don't. I switched to ISO's for a nit, but after reading your earlier post, decided to rip a new IFO to continue testing. I currently only have 26 ripped discs, but I have a large collection of DVD's i am getting ready to put on my HD for family viewing. hesitant to put in the time because of play back delays and JRiver lock ups. If you click the jriver window more than once it may crash the program altogether. Not everyone in my fam has the patience to wait ;-).

So there is a lot of weirdness going on, and I am sure it has something to do with what I am doing, not JRiver....

.IFO rip on local drive. I click on an IFO file (either via theater view, or directly from standard view and nothing happens. THen after a few seconds, say 5 sec, my mouse pointer changes to the busy circle. since the last update, the name of the DVD pops up in a view window. then (i just timed it) it lasts more than 80 seconds *LOCATING (it varies a bit) and then the file starts playing. prior to the last update, the busy circle would just persist for like 90 seconds before jriver started playing the movie when playing IFO files as well...

I have blazing fast internet connection on this computer. I7 processor, solid state HD for programs, fast second HD for data.

Here is a dump of my log file. not all of it. but i included a segment where it is hanging, clearly, with 1000 ms intervals. So hanging for seconds at a time... the log file has like three or four of these segments. could not include them all.
