Why Two Different Search Methods In Forum?
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:24:31 am »

In another thread I mentioned that I found few search hits on "Security Essentials". I had used the search box near the upper right on the Forum page. Jim H advised that it would be better if I used the Advanced Search which is found in the gray bar near the upper left. It did give a lot more returns.

So why are there two search functions here with the most obvious giving few returns? Over the years I have probably missed a lot of good info using search, except for the times I've used Advanced Search.

The general search does act weird. At some point we'll be upgrading the forum to the new 2.0 version of SMF. I'm testing that on another board to be sure it's REALLY stable first. On there, the general search simply appears to act as a subset of the full search like I assume this one is supposed to work (but doesn't).

In the mean time, use Google to help you find better results:

   http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Ayabb.jriver.com

Add your search terms at the end after "site:yabb.jriver.com" in search area.  Use double quotes to find a phrase.

Thanks MrC.

I need to put that on a 'cheat sheet' at my computer. I never can remember it and it's useful for all forums. Will it give better results than the Advanced Search on the forum?

I think it has better results; it is especially good at ordering them by relevance and weeding out duplicates.

If you use Firefox, create a quick search bookmark:

location: http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Ayabb.jriver.com%20%s
keyword: jrmc

Now you can just type:

  jrmc search terms here

in the Firefox address (aka Awesome) bar and it will take you directly to search results for those terms.
