MC in January issue of The Absolute Sound magazine
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:11:51 am »

On page 38 of the current issue of The Absolute Sound Magazine, there is a long article on listening tests done by Charles Zeilig and Jay Clawson.  It's the second of a 3 part series on computer music.

JRiver Media Center gets a lot of attention in the article since they used it as their benchmark program for testing.

The article may turn out to be a watershed in the evolution of audiophile sound from old style electronic equipment to new age computer based equipment.  The magazine issue is available for $4.95 as a PDF download.

Quotes:

"After completing the first survey
of programs, we settled on MC for
playback in all of our subsequent tests.
Late in the preparation of this article
we added cPlay and then, while in galley
stage, added a newly-released program ...

"Although we have generally eschewed
overly flowery language in our sonic
descriptions, in some cases the subjective
rankings shown in Table 2a and 2b do not
adequately convey just how significant
the sound quality of certain programs
actually was. We feel that a score equal
to or exceeding 165 passes a critical
threshold where the emotional intent of
the performer (for example, Jose Carreras
on Track 5 of Misa Criolla) was forcefully
conveyed, almost bringing us to tears ...."

MC frequently had a "Sound Score" between 160 and 200.
