Last night, our wren returned to our garden. From Cuba, I think. Not bad for what must weigh less than KingSparta's steak tonight.

I had a wren build a nest in my truck grill. I'm such a softie that I won't drive it until they hatch and fly away. I also catch and release mice. (Sorry, King)

I make birdhouses and let the kids paint them. As nice as they are, and the use they get from the housewrens they don't compare to one the wrens found last year. Out by the dog kennel is part of an old fence. The wooden post at the end just happened to be a handy spot to hang an empty coffee can that was left over from some garden experiment a couple of years ago. Whenever I walked past, a noisy and very excited wren would scold me. After several weeks I happened to walk by again, only this time I could hear little pleading voices from within the can. Careful sneaking, and looking from the bottom up I could see the busy little wrens had made a home from the can placed over the end of an old post. One mans junk is another wrens goldmine. I left the can.

For some reason I thought you WERE a republican. My sincerest apologies.

In my end of the country, you must be EXTREMELY careful when shooting a skunk. Timing and location is everything.

And I did have a 9' boa when I was younger. Fed it rats. I hate rats. Kept the snake in a glass and wood cage in my bedroom.

I try not to kill anything that is either not dangerous or isn't dinner. If either of those two conditions exist, my NRA side takes over. 9th level Sharpshooter. Codicil: if it's not dangerous and you kill it, you have to eat it. Skunk tastes terrible.

If you only knew how many raccoons have been sent to the big garbage can in the sky by me, you would probably want to put them on the endangered species list. Refrence to garbage can is key. Started when I was a kid and had to clean up after the scourge of the neighborhood on an almost daily basis. We had an old fifty-five gallon drum back then. I tried everything to keep this vermin out. Best thing turned out to be a 16 gauge slug.

I'd use a 10 gauge if I had one. Lots of bb's are good when it's not about sport.

I hate rats, too. Had those in the basement of the house I lived in while in college in Madison. Big suckers. I showered down there every morning. Used to hear 'em rustling around in all the junk the landlord had stored down there. Not a nice way to start the morning.

Shooting skunks is easy. Just don't miss. I kill lots of mosquitoes, and they aren't dangerous, at least around here. Don't eat 'em, though.

I'm more of a libertarian than anything else, and I've been saying that a lot longer than it's been "all the rage". Unfortunately, I can't stand slime, so the last national-level democrat to get a vote from me was Jimmy Carter. Turned out to be a very good human being, but not such a good president. Anyway, that's not to say that republicans have gotten my votes since.

Hey, maybe I should make some religious comments, too, and really heat this thread up.

Had Subway for lunch with my daughter.

Not listening to anything on MJ right now. I have a headache, probably from thinking about democrats.

My kids see deer, pheasant, wild turkey (the bird, not the drink) and lots of other wildlife out our window. We have to drive a few hundred miles north to see bear, though (I like it that way). And no poisonous snakes here. But the democrats have told me that if I keep driving my SUV, then the wildlife will all go away. So I drive a lot around raccoons and crows.

Yeah, I want to try some poke sallet some day. I had dandelion leaves with lobster tail as part of the 3rd course of a 6 course dinner Saturday night, so why not poke sallet?

Zev, the classic U.S. bayous are down south, like in Louisiana. There are lots of snakes and gators and other ugly characters down there, so I don't spend much time in those parts. I guess they'd call me a Yankee, as I live in the northern part of the Midwest (man, that sounds odd from a non-U.S. perspective). Not as far north as JRiver, though; I may be a Packer fan, but I'm not totally insane.

Thanks for calling it "poke sallet" instead of "polk salad". A lot of people here call it by the latter. It's actually quite good but you can get the same taste by mixing turnip greens and spinach. And you don't have to be so careful cooking it.

Maybe I can work up a little heat by telling you about a bumper sticker I thought of the other day. You've all seen the "Don't blame me, I voted for Bush" stickers that came out when Clinton was elected. Mine would be "Don't Blame Me, I voted for Nader ... Oh, I guess you CAN blame me."

And he spends money like he had a printing press out back. Here in Wisconsin, we had one of those, a republican named Tommy Thompson. He built a $1 billion stadium for the dying sport of baseball, *without* allowing a public referendum. It was a 3-day, non-stop, stay-until-you-vote-our-way, closed-door session. The public was seething at the result. One of the five counties that got screwed recalled their republican representative, and he ended up being replaced by a democrat--which gave the dems state control. The bozo republicans taxed-and-spent their way right out of control. Thankfully, now Tommy is out of our hair, but sadly for many of you, he is in Washington.

Why do you have to be careful cooking poke sallet?

As far as the Nader bumper sticker, it assumes there is a problem. Trying to be fair and at least somewhat impartial, Gore would've been the problem in the current environment. The cabinet he would've put in place would be as clueless as Clinton's.

And remember, Perot did to many what you are claiming Nader did to you.

It was a joke.

The rumor is that if poke sallet is not prepared correctly, it is poison. Kind of like that Japanese blowfish thing. I kind of doubt the validity of that claim. But I'm not willing to try to prove it wrong.

Take large ones-what you call prawn?-
Cook it on the grill or MUCH better with some butter in a frying pan.Put some Cognac and burn.Half=do not let the alcool burn to the end,cover when when flames start to be smaller
In a cup in a pot with bolling water put butter,some ground cumin,half a sqeeze lemon and a generous amount of garlic puree.Never stop to turn with a spoon.When you see white foam comming,stop it
Now put some sauce on the prawns,eat it and post to Interact,i want to know

I'll tell you what matters. Getting some warmer weather. Had to put on coveralls this past week at work!! 5th floor of building with no windows yet. Nearly had to tie off just stay on the deck. Wind gusts over 40 mph. Anybody know of some ancient sun worship ritual, barring sacrifice, that'll work for us poor Minnesotans? This is getting old fast. Ready to move back in with Mom. She lives in Florida.

Been down there in early spring. Could almost set your watch for an afternoon shower that arrived at around 3 PM. Yeah, it gets muggy there. Ever been in this state in the summer? Several days of temps in the 90's and humidity to match aren't that great either. Can hardly walk out the door without having to catch your breath. Not mention the mosquito, horsefly, and deerflys that try to drain the life out of you. Where's an Orkin man when you need one?

Ever watch children eat it? Especially when the pasta isn't chopped into little pieces. My four year old gets sauce streaks nearly reaching her eyebrows. Have to laugh every time, sure are a blessing aren't they.
