How do you add (or edit links) to a view. Audio and Video have links but I want documents to have links so I can easily add author images from google as thumbnails

Tools > Links > Manage Links... when you're in a view you want, and then modify the "Show For Files That Match This Search", adding the appropriate Media Types as necessary.  You can use any search rules here.

How did I miss that.  Obvious.  I couldn't work out where the filter was defined that restricted the context despite looking many times at the manage links page.
