DLNA feature request for Samsung TVs
« on: December 18, 2012, 10:30:03 pm »

Samsung's Allshare DLNA implementation lacks the ability to sort by track number (dumb, huh?). It sorts by track title, so if there was a DLNA server customization option to add the track number to the track title, the Samsung TV would sort track in the proper order.

Something to consider, thanks!

You can customize the DLNA views, such that [Track #] is prepended to [Name].

Ask if you need help...

Wait, I spoke too soon. While tracks are listed as "track number + track title", they're all being displayed as folders containing the track instead of the track itself! I'm not clear if this is a server or renderer issue, any suggestions?

It might be the best you can do (short of modifying the Name field to include Track #).  The client is in control here.  If it chooses not to ask for, provide, or sort by track numbers, you're out of luck.  See also:

I wonder if JRiver could create an option you could set to send [Track #] [Name] in place of [Name] so that users could have a workaround.  Bob?

Yes, that was my original request.

I should clarify what I've done so far. Using the latest MC (18.0.97), I've customized the DLNA view and added
Pad([Track #],2) [Name] under Album Artist and Album and they show up on the Samsung TV (PN52E80000 but as FOLDERS containing the track itself. If the TV was given the name as track#-name, that'd solve the sorting problem.

Thanks for considering this option.

Yup, that's what happens w/DLNA.  Essentially, there are containers and files.  The client has control over the presentation of the files.  The client browses the containers (which is what you've had to configure to get the information you want for sorting purposes) - that's why they appear one level deeper.

Adding an option for that wouldn't be too hard.
Viewing the contents of an album though should already be in track order unless the renderer reorganizes it which it isn't supposed to do if the container is an album.

This would be nice.  Here's a real use case from the other day's testing.

I'm pulling some track from MC.  There's no track # on this DLNA device, so I don't know what track # is currently playing.  I want to skip forward to track # 8.  I have no idea how many button presses this will require, since I have no idea what track # I'm currently on.  So I have to use some other device to see the full album list and count.

Or, there are albums with identical track names.  (I guess the artists think this is hip.)  Which one is playing?  The only differentiation is track #, but on most DLNA devices I've seen, this is missing.

Put in an option for that and it works fine but I think we are going to allow an expression instead.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm having the same issue on a new Samsung Blu-ray player.

Was wondering if the option was actually implemented?  If so, I do not see it.  Or is there an expression I'm supposed to be using?

They fixed this by adding an option to send an expression to a DLNA receiver. I use Pad([Track #],2) [Name] and it works fine.

Thanks Mr Odd.  Are you just living with each track being in their own individual folder or where are you adding the expression?  If I put it under Album Artist and Album, I have a separate folder for every track like you mentioned earlier.

Right, there's another place to put it: Tools > Media Network > Add Or Configure DLNA Servers > Title Expression

Thanks.  That technically works, but it leads to two other problems.

1) It displays as Pad(1,2),[Name], etc.  When I was doing it under customize views, I was able to edit Expression to display to [Track #] [Name] so that it displayed correctly.  The Title Expression editor does not give me that option.
2) It pads the name of all media types, not just audio.  For example, all images now display as Pad(,2)[Name] since the Track # tag is empty.

Are you having the same issues?  I'm guessing I need a larger expression with an isempty statement and something to accommodate Episodes for TV Shows as well.  Unfortunately, my code writing skills for such an expression are lacking.

ifelse(isequal([Media Type], Audio), PadNumber([Track #], 2)/ )[Name]

Thanks again MrC--you make it look so easy.  Once you got me started, I was able to amend it so it sorts TV Shows by Episode as well:

ifelse(isequal([Media Type], Audio), PadNumber([Track #], 2)/ , isequal([Media Sub Type], TV Show), PadNumber([Episode], 2)/ )[Name]

Works perfectly.
