Separating a song from CD into duplicate copies. Solution?
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:33:34 pm »

I've exhausted much time looking for a solution to this.
MC is working great, except on a few CD's it takes one song away onto a duplicate copy. The cover art is duplicated; first copy will have all but the one song, the other will have only the one separate song. Windows explorer shows all in one file, they are all on standard CD's (not compilations of groups). Each time I have tried re-burning the CD (dBpoweramp) erasing the old copy before moving the new copy to my system laptop.
Led Zeppelin II; Heartbreaker
Meatloaf Bat out of hell; You took the words right out of my mouth
Bonnie Raite; Love letter
Black Sabbath; Fairies wear boots
Tom Cochrane; Life is a highway
Duplicate cover art with one song apart beside the others.
The following link had the same issue, but the solution was to ensure all songs had the same artist, mine all do (same artist, same composer, same album...).

Any clue as to why this is happening?

If you can upload here an export of the album metadata, I'll take a look.

File > Export Playlist

and set the following:

Format:
   Text File (CSV delimited)
Included Fields:
   All Fields
Output Range
   All

and save it to your desktop for easy upload into a post here.  I'll assume the albums you mention above are the problematic ones, unless you tell me otherwise.

Those are the problematic ones indeed. All other 400 or so albums (including some compilations) work without any issues. Thanks very much, will post this for you when I get home after work.

So here it is. I did Zeppelin only as I figured we'd see the issue and could resolve the others also. I did notice that another Zeppelin CD had Jennifer warned name inserted into the script (!?). Anyway, that's another issue for another time. Script from Zeppelin II only, Heartbreaker was in a different area than the others.... Even I can see there's something weird here, just no idea why, how, or how to fix it.

In order for a set of tracks to be recognized as an Album, they must reside in the same folder.  So, use the Rename, Move & Copy tool to rename the folder portion of the album, placing all tracks in the same folder.

C:\Users\Grant\Music\Led Zeppelin\Led Zeppelin II\05 Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker.wav

OK I am missing something. Are they not in the same folder? In Windows explorer they are. Per above they seem to be. Thanks so much for the quick reply so far!

I see! Thanks again. So it isn't even the missing song that's messing things up; it's the preceding songs. I'll work this out now.
Best,

The album analyzer looks at a number of items.  See:

The Jennifer Warnes imprint was only on that one CD transfer (unsure how), and re-ripping did not resolve the problem. One song from each of those same CD's does not pull in all the required information into MC. Running the export (I've shown 2 songs only to keep this streamlined) you can see there is less information on the one song.

Example (1 of 8) successful song transfer:

C:\Users\grant.MONASHEE\Music\Led Zeppelin\Led Zeppelin II\04 Led Zeppelin - Thank You.wav,Thank You,Led Zeppelin,Led Zeppelin II,Pop/Rock,,,10/22/69,1411,Inside File,5,4:47,4,1,Audio,,,Led Zeppelin,,,,,,,,,Blues-Rock/Hard Rock/Heavy Metal/Arena Rock/British Metal/British Blues/Album Rock/Regional Blues,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,,,,,Default,,,01/10/13 7:38 AM,never played,,,never skipped,wav,48.5 MB,01/09/13 7:09 AM,01/09/13 7:09 AM,None (PCM),"-compression=""PCM""",,,,,4943674043958,Atlantic,,Jimmy Page/Robert Plant,,,,,,,,,,2,2,-1,,,,,,,,,44100 Hz,2,16,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Example of song that does not work properly:

C:\Users\grant.MONASHEE\Music\Led Zeppelin\Led Zeppelin II\05 Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker.wav,Heartbreaker,Led Zeppelin,,,,,,1411,Folder.jpg,? stars,4:13,,,Audio,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,,,,,Default,,,01/10/13 7:38 AM,never played,,,never skipped,wav,42.8 MB,01/09/13 7:09 AM,01/09/13 7:09 AM,PCM,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,259245,933866,3684329,2,65794,-1,,,,,,,,,44100 Hz,2,16,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They all show as successful rips. Viewing info in Explorer shows all identical fields. Checking your link (from previous post) everything seems OK:

all tracks are of [Media Type]=Audio
all tracks have exactly the same, non-empty [Album] value
all tracks are in the same folder - i.e. have the same value for the [Filename (path)] field
all tracks have sequential [Track #] values starting at 1
all tracks have the same, or sequentially increasing [Disc #] values (empty and 1 are considered the same)
there are at least 2 files or 10 minutes of audio (the sum of the [Duration] field values >= 10 minutes)

But there is missing information per above which is most obviously the cause. Is there a way to add information into the file, or force the songs into their respective folder? I can't use the rename/move option, as the folders are definitely the same for all songs in the 6 albums in question.
All 6 that have done this have the same lack of info yet they all appear to have the same info at ripping and in explorer. Ideas?
Thanks very much for your help on this. Do you want to see all 6 albums?

Even the keenest eye will typically overlook minor differences in things like case, number or type of whitespace characters, etc.

So its best to let MC do this for you.  Select all the tracks for the album, and use the Tag Action Window to tell you.  Either there will be a single value for fields such as Album, or Filename (path), or Disc #, or it will say Varies.  If you see Varies in a key field, you've found your problem, and can just edit there to correct all at once.  You may want to set the Tag Action Window to Show All Values.

It would be better to include the CSV file as an attachment, and not paste it into the forum here - too much work on our end otherwise.  Your pastes do not include Field labels, so I'm not certain what the data is.  You can just export all albums, and indicate which ones are causing trouble (or just the selected albums if you want).

There's no need to re-rip.  A simple correction of meta-data is all that is needed, and MC will do that quickly once you've spotted what to change.

Took me a minute to figure out how to tag ALL songs in the album, because the album is shown twice (one called "unassigned" as are all 7, not 6, albums with issues). But I got it now on my trial version at work (just DL'd this AM to try and fix this problem, real version at home). I fixed Bonnie Raite, so am sure I can do the same at home with all 7. If not, more Q's to follow.
MUCH appreciated how quickly you guys have taken care of this. I'll try and get my wife to love this software on her PC upstairs also (currently foobar), so another order likely coming. Support is critical, and in this case was fantastic!

Good to hear.

Keep in mind - the "album" isn't shown twice.  Rather, MC uses its view system to display groupings based upon the existing metadata.  So if the metadata is inconsistent, you'll have more than a single grouping.

That said, you can create views that will group based on other criteria.  If you had such a view, the "album" might have grouped on a single group.  You can also modify the views to temporarily ungroup and sort by any of the columns in the file list.  This can help simplify selection of a split set of files.

I was getting this problem with several albums, and I could not figure out what was going on.

It turned out to be #!@#$%^&*$  crowd sourcing.  Grrrr.

Hey - why have your mistakes only make trouble for you, when you can have your mistakes make problems for thousands of people instead ?

In all three cases, it turns out that the data from the online database had the concepts for "Artist" and "Album Artist" reversed.   In each case, there were guest artists on a track or two, and the tagging person had put the data for the individual track's artists in "Album Artist" and had then put the Album Cover's overall artist name into "Artist".

How much clearer can we make this ?   Artist for who plays that song, and Album Artist for whose Album it is.

Assuredly a case for "you get what you pay for"  ;D

I suppose it is still faster to use the database and correct the errors, than to copy everything by hand from my disks.

At least it's not a bug in JRiver MC18.
