Image Display Problems with some Graphics Cards on XP
« on: January 18, 2013, 05:23:53 pm »

I have posted on 18.0.112 regarding this problem. I have different manufacturers and specs of graphics cards running both XP SP2 and XP SP3. All machines fail to display images full screen, I just get a black screen. I have many thousands of images and this is a problem across the board not dependent on image type or size.

Videos are fine, Image edit is fine and full screen with other apps is fine. MC17 is fine (I previously posted that it was OK in MC15 which was true but I have tested with MC17 and it's fine)

Gappie confirms that MC18 can work on XP as his graphics card is fine so I suspect the problem is certain cards on XP (unfortunately all the ones I have!).

I found the following on 18.0.24 (8/7/2012)

3. Faster: Image playback starts and switches images much faster (the 3d system no longer forces textures to a power of two to use hardware mipmapping, please report any issues with specific video hardware).

I am not a graphics developer and don't really know what this means but I wonder if this is the relevant change which caused the problem. I can't find a download of a version of MC18 to try it but would be happy to try 18.0.23 vs 24 if it was possible to reference links to these builds please.

Alternatively I would appreciate any help from people on ordinary graphics cards on XP to say what card and XP version they are on and whether full screen image display works with MC18 for them.

I have a related problem with MC 18 running on XP.   I reported this problem earlier.  The latest is that I now have two different machines with different graphics cards that can't display a cover art (view first file) image from the panes view in mc18,,,  Display view of a file currently playing gives you the full sized image.  MC 16 and 17 have no problems displaying the image in the panes view so it should not be beyond the graphics card capabilties.  (Its annoying to not be able to view the album image in a large size).

The bug is not a problem running vista.

thanks

Good detective work.

With an image playing (or black screening in your case), hit Pause/Break on the keyboard until it shows the texture info at the top left.  Could you provide the full string?

On Dell GX620 texture string: 2048 x 2048 (0x25ED47)
On IBM Thinkcentre texture string: 2048 x 2048 (0x27ED47)

Both black screen on full screen image play.

Thanks for looking at this.

I think this should be fixed in MC 18.0.125 or newer.  It has to do with graphics cards that require their textures to be powers of two.

If possible, please post in this thread and let us know one way or the other once the new build is available.

Thanks for your help.

I have loaded 18.0.126 and am pleased to say it fixes the problem.

I have tried on 3 different video cards which were all black screening before on full screen image display and all are now fine.

Thanks for your help.
