WASAPI / Application Volume
« on: June 25, 2013, 07:48:58 am »

Am I right in thinking that application volume is not relevant when WASAPI is selected?
If so might it be an idea for it to be either disabled/or labelled as such when this mode is in operation?

Only internal volume should work in WASAPI Exclusive mode, all others not.

Some devices honor the system volume, even when using WASAPI exclusive or ASIO.  It's up to the device / driver.

Application volume should be bypassed with any exclusive output, since the application volume is done at the system mixer level (which is what's being bypassed in hardware direct output modes).

As an example of what Matt said, my Creative X-Fi Elite does not bypass Windows System volume for either ASIO or WASAPI Exlusive. I think other Creative cards work the same way. I think this might be why "Maximize device volume during playback" is an option under JRiver's WASAPI settings. It makes sure that when using internal volume or bitstreaming that the system volume is at maximum. This is because the system volume can still be in use even with exclusive mode on some cards.
