NEW: RAW image support using LibRaw
« on: July 19, 2013, 01:49:19 pm »

MC19 switches to LibRaw for RAW image decoding.

This improves the range of RAW images supported and also the RAW import and decoding performance inside Media Center.

More on LibRaw here:
http://www.libraw.org/

Thanks to LibRaw, Alex Tutubalin, and Dave Coffin for their contributions.

Hi Matt, Sorry for dumb question but does this mean MC19 will be able to view raw files directly without making a jpeg cache ?
Cheers

It should definitely be possible to decode RAW files without saving to a JPEG cache - but it would be very slow. In fact, I'm pretty sure Media Center already has this option.
I use the quarter-size decoding option in MC to try and speed things up, but it's still very slow on my machine.

Thanks 6233638, I will have to look more closely at the settings.

I'm not sure why it must be so slow providing you have the computer horsepower. My raw files are large (and psd files massive) but Adobe Bridge has no real problem (after an initial several seconds processing the folder). There are some free programs that can also view raw files that are quite speedy. This of course is on the local machine, I havent tried streaming them.

That'll be Bridge creating its JPEG cache.

Yes, I originally thought this was just generating the 256 pixel "embedded" thumbs (as jpegs) but indeed there are 1024 (HQ thumbs) and "full" preview jpeg options ( and a "screen size" variant) in Appdata/cache folders for Bridge. Thanks, I should have known that.
