Status of the new Linux version
« on: September 18, 2013, 03:29:54 pm »

We haven't shipped released, but a lot is working.  The first version will be audio only, including most Media Network functions.

At this time, we have a GUI, it plays audio, but isn't stable yet.  The DLNA Renderer works.

We will do a half price initial offer in an email newsletter soon.

First, very rough builds will be available in October.

To understand why we're doing this, please read my first post here:

We gave a build to a business partner today.  Hopefully, it will work.

The test went pretty well.  It worked as a DLNA Renderer.

That's good news.  :)
Two years ago I switched from Windows to Linux.
The only missing software was Media Jukebox.
Media Jukebox runs quite well under Wine, but this isn't optimal.

How long will be updates available without paying more, if I purchase now?

This is indeed very good news for the Linux community, to have a media player of the quality of JRiver usable with it. I run Ubuntu 13.04 as my default O/S but I dual boot to Windows 7 Ultimate, due to my business and my customers, this both on my home/office desktops and my laptops.

But I am saddened at pricing according to the email I have just received. Surely you will be considering long standing customers with an existing licensed version for Windows etc, to be granted a discount for those of us with Linux as well. I understand a brand new user with Linux, to be charged full price, but I am hoping this will not be the case for existing customers.

+1 :)

i sadly had to leave MC circa V14 after years and years of using MC since i went all on the switch to linux (and lovin' it ever since)
i agree that a switch discount would be great and help alot of people move over and try the linux version
Also, out of curiosity, why is the linux version which is audio only priced like the full windows MC, will the price include all versions until its up to part with the windows MC (with videos, home theatre etc..)

and lastly, if i buy it will it run on non debian distros (im using the pretty popular Arch linux)

best

We won't know which flavors we'll support for a few more months.

No cross-OS discounts are available.

The price is the price.  Sorry if it's too much for you.

It's available now for 50% of the full price.  There are no upgrade prices from other OS's.

Minor updates are free.  Major upgrades are not.  We usually offer a better price early in the cycle.

Thanks Jim

50% is a good discount, this is acceptable. Still unfortunate that I will have to maintain two upgrade costs though, one for Windows and now one for Linux.

Every thought about a bundle price?  But both the windows and the linux version all for one low price... or if you are already a windows customer package the linux version for XXXX.  As I am in the same boat.. I would like to support but if I happened to miss the half off version timeframe I do not really want to but both at full price.

**Note I only stop in the fourms once every few months to see what is new...

The Linux version is an exciting development.  So's I'm clear on this... you're asking me to purchase a license without knowing if my linux distro (debian) will be supported?

Debian is what we're working with now.  We're not asking you to do it, but we're offering a discount if you do.

Will the initial "audio only" version play high resolution and DSD content ?

Yes :P

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.  Both DSD and high-sample rate will be supported for local playback.)

Yes :P

Well if you'd answered the first question more clearly I wouldn't have felt compelled to seek a qualification ;-) I assume that hi-res PCM is a given and that DSD is in the probably category.

Good work guys.

We're hoping to put out a very rough release today or tomorrow.  Please keep your expectation level low.

The release will be posted at the top of this board.

We believe it will run on Debian since that's what we're developing on.  It may not run on anything else with this release, but you can help us learn more.

Thanks.
