G'Day folk.  :)

While reviewing the results of the new xmltv_ns format Season and Episode number import functionality I found a lot of evidence of a problem that I had seen before, but had not been able to gather data on, or at least not had time. I kept one example recording that showed the problem, but I hadn't gotten around to investigating the cause. The example involves a recording of an episode of "Criminal Minds" which has the Title:Sub-title "Helen West:Criminal Minds". The content of the recording is in fact an episode of Criminal Minds. However, somehow the program title was saved as "Helen West", which I deduced is the title used for the series known as "The Helen West Casebook". The original program title (which is the series name) "Criminal Minds" was saved as the sub-title.

I had also seen similar occurrences with recordings of "Doctor Who", or in one case where the movie "A Beautiful Mind" was recorded as "Doctor Who:A Beautiful Mind". The interesting thing was that the correct program was being recorded in the case of both "Criminal Minds" and the movie "A Beautiful Mind", but the incorrect title was being used for display of the recording in Theatre View. So the "Criminal Minds" episode started a new series group named "Helen West", and the movie "A Beautiful Mind" was mixed in with my "Doctor Who" recordings.

I thought the problem was occurring when the recording was saved, but now I have found that the titles are being mixed up in the Guide, even though the XMLTV EPG file is correct.

So, I have collected five examples. I'll do one post for each example, and with each I will provide a text file with a summary of my observations about the problem in that example plus the section of the XMLTV file that created the EPG record in JRiver. I will also add between two and four screenshots showing the MC Guide with the error, at the overview and detail levels. I think that should be enough to understand the problem.

If more data is required Yaobing, please ask. I still have the original full XMLTV file if you want it, but it is 3.58MB so I won't attach it here.

First example in the next post.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, when I first used 20.0.21 to import xmltv_ns numbers and saw the problem, I cleared the EPG and re-ran the EPG collection and importing process, to make sure he problem wasn't something to do with left over EPG pieces. The result in the Guide was identical. I had also rebooted the HTPC after installing 20.0.21, as I always do, to make sure the new version has a clean start.

First example: "Harry's Practice" is retitled "Bates Motel".

Code: [Select]
Example of EPG retaining a previous program's Title, and using the proper title as a Sub-title.
In this case the programs are consecutive, and are near midnight, crossing the change of date.
Both programs are series. Only the first has Season and Episode numbers.

The series (no category defined) "Harry's Practice" has picked up the title from series "Bates Motel".
The title "Harry's Practice" has been pushed into the sub-title field.
The donor program has both title and sub-title.
The recipient program has only a title. Plus the description is just a copy of the title.

Second example: "Man Up!" is retitled "Parks and Recreation".

Code: [Select]
Example of EPG retaining a previous program's Title, and using the proper title as a Sub-title.
In this case the programs are non-consecutive with one program between them, and are near midnight, crossing the change of date.
Both programs are series. Only the first has Season and Episode numbers.

The series "Man Up!" has picked up the title from the series "Parks and Recreation".
The title "Man Up!" has been pushed into the sub-title field.
The donor program has both title and sub-title.
The recipient program has only a title. Plus the description is just a copy of the title.
Strangely, the program inbetween, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has been left unchanged.

One thing I have noticed is that if MC guesses the wrong show, or if you pick the wrong show for some reason, it will continue to be wrong until you fix it.

So, what I have done in those situations is to select one show in a series, and do a find TV/Movie info on it.  I make sure I choose the correct info.  Then I can select the rest of the shows with the same name, and do them at the same time, and they end up right.

I'm not following you Muzicman. What is the context of your observation?

Ah! I think you are talking about fixing the name and details of a show after it is recorded, and you have multiple episodes on disk with the incorrect information. Then you can select them and fix it in MC Standard View. Yes, I do that as well.

These incorrect titles are correct in the XMLTV file, but are wrong in the Guide, and are a mixture of program titles.

Many (most) of these examples don't have Season and Episode numbers, and are not yet recordings, just records in the Guide. So it isn't possible to do "Get Movie & TV Info" on them.

I haven't thoroughly tested what happens when I try to record one of the programs with an existing subscription rule, as I would need to see the Guide when the recording schedule was created, and later when it was actually recorded. But the two cases I saw behaved differently. Criminal Minds was correctly recorded, even though its Title:Sub-title was "Helen West:Criminal Minds". In the case of the "Doctor Who:A Beautiful Mind" recording I'm not sure what the recording trigger was. I always record Doctor Who, so it could have been the target program, but I'm pretty sure I selected A Beautiful Mind to be recorded manually in the Guide.

In the examples I provided you will see that sometimes the correct metadata and images are selected for the original recipient program, and sometimes they are for the donor program. So I suspect that subscriptions for either donor or recipient could go wrong.

I've documented another example over here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=92387.msg636502#msg636502

It is of a recording taken from the Time Shift buffer with the same problem as the Guide titles described in this thread.

The program I used in example number 5 above was recorded incorrectly.

I usually record Scorpion on a subscription. The actual program recorded correctly.

However, MC also recorded "Modern Family", because MC incorrectly gave it the title of "Scorpion", as explained above.

Is anyone else seeing this issue in their Guide? For the moment the problem seems to have sorted itself out, and there are no examples in my guide right now. If it was just a problem with the XMLTV data I wouldn't worry, since that will sort itself out in time, but the XMLTV data was correct so I am concerned that the problem may recur unnoticed. It shouldn't be necessary to monitor if this stuff works all the time. Once set up it should just work.

Any comments?

I still have not had a chance to study your issues carefully.

Okay. I provided all the sample data so you could review it when you had time.

As I said above, for now the problem seems to have gone away. But I couldn't see a reason for it in the first place, so it may return. I'll leave it with you.

I haven't been monitoring for this error, or checking my recordings much, but I had another example of this last night, from a recording made a few weeks ago. So it is still happening.

It looks like this problem should be fixed with the latest changes.

Quote
21.0.27 (12/11/2015)
4. Fixed: When loading XMLTV EPG data, "Series" field could inherit a value from an old program in the same time slot if the new program was not a series.

Also described here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=101770.msg706443#msg706443

Then this change should eliminate other similar problems, including the incorrect "rerun" value described in the above thread.

Quote
5. Changed: When loading XMLTV EPG data, all relevant fields are updated, instead of only updating those that are not empty.  This prevents wrong data from being retained.
