I know that MC doesn't natively support rating songs on a 1-10 scale. I am wondering if there are some kind of workarounds I can use to make that work so that I can use a 1-10 scale as easily as I use the stock 1-5 scale (as in that it lets me edit the rating right from the "Now Playing" section right on top.

Would some kind of expression be the way to go, as in this topic:?

I'd say yes, if only because I love the functionality of being able to edit my rating up top, like in the picture below.

That'd be great if 1-10 was coming and it would have the same functionality that the current ratings system has right now.... I'd love for the powers that be behind this program take note... I'd love them forever!

That said, is there some kind of workaround that would work for me now, or am I stuck with just 1-5?

Since we're on the subject of rating systems, would it also be possible to implement a 1-3 system in much the same vein, or would it require a lot more work? Perhaps it's because I'm quite generous, but when I rate, it's quite rare for me to go below a 3 on the 1-5 scale since I'm very, very selective about my music.

I just thought of a potential problem with the 10 star system we wished for and are now getting. Portable Software like Poweramp etc only support 5 star ratings. Gonemad also supports 5 stars but allows half star ratings. If MC20 has 10 stars but portable apps only support 5 stars, it will cause major issues, since half the stars won't be displayed. Now I realize half star ratings is better if you use a portable device too, that's why other windows music players use it. 5 Stars is pretty much the universal system, it's used by essentially everyone, with some allowing half stars. Hmmm...anyone else think of this issue too? I've never seen an android music app with 10 star ratings.

A 5 star system with half star capability gives the same range as a 10 star system and will be compatible with most portable music player apps.

I have been; I'd just like to try using a simpler system that doesn't revolve around the number '5'.
If it'd be too much trouble to code, that's fine. I had just wondered if it were feasible.

Failing that, I'll throw my hat into the ring for a half-star 1-10 system. Even before I wished for a three-star system, I had thought that'd be a good idea.

The missing half star rating option is the only thing that bothers me about MJ14. I'd even be prepared to contribute to add the coding to it. I only use MJ14 for laptop music control. No video, multi zone or any other fancy stuff, so it's enough for me. I especially love the system volume control option since I only use USB speakers because I want 1 global volume adjustment. Amazing how most music players out there don't have that.

Musicbee has the half star option, but it doesn't have system volume option and no option to disable it's internal volume control.

You'll have to download manually for now. We aren't updating the XML file yet.

You add a new library field in Options and set it to 10 stars as the edit type.

1-10 is for fields you add (and configure that way).

The default rating field will remain 1-5.

I am guessing that this new field won't be able to be tied in to Play Doctor and that it will still eliminate songs that are 1 or 2 stars? I like the idea of having additional rating spots - and could see this being useful for creating additional playlist/smartlists but this doesn't solve the actual Play Doctor problem for me.

To me the 5 star rating system has different meanings between video and audio:

Video - pretty common when looking at reviews, etc - 1 or 2 stars means that the movie isn't very good. - So these are bad

Audio - at least to me - indicating a rating of anything means that you like it better than other songs - so a 1 means I like it better than the unrated songs, 2 a little more, etc.

I could see where there is a case for having an indicator for songs you don't like - this could be an actual rating of Zero and you would still have Unrated which is neutral or alternatively Zero or Unrated is neutral and a negative rating could be I don't like it.
