Title: Windows upgrade???
Post by: graham on June 21, 2009, 08:08:14 pm
I have been running IceTcpPlus without problems for years.
Now when I click on the icon it just hangs.
The only change was a Windows update at the weekend.
Removing the updates ( 961501, 969898, 970268 and 968537) hasn't fixed the problem
If I try re_installing Ice the setup program does not execute.
If I run the setup program as another user I can force the message that
"The service cannot be started, either because it isdisabled or because it has no enable devices associated with it."

I have supervisor rights, have looked for obvious services not started to no avail.

Help

Please review the following Forum topics and try to reinstall:
    http://yabb.jriver.com/ice/index.php/topic,834.0.html
and
    http://yabb.jriver.com/ice/index.php/topic,17.0.html

While both refer to ICE.TCP Pro, they can also apply to PLUS.

If neither of those work, try downloading the PLUS trialware.

Please advise your results.

Thank you.
I had already searched and read those threads.

My laptop is a Toshiba, so the Acer etc programs wern't relevant.
I couldn't detect anything obvious with msconfig, so I had to do a complete re-install!
(Toshiba's recovery disks re format the primary partition)  Ugh!!
Works fine now.

So I still don't know what caused the problem.
The only relevant program I can detect in the nominated threads was Nero Essentials, but this wasn't upgraded.

It should be noted that it wasn't originally an install issue.
Ice had been installed and running successfully for months on this laptop.
It wasn't untill Macrostuff did an upgrade on Sunday that Ice stopped working.

Perhaps because I am down under I should put the CD in upside down
Cheers

Windows XP Version 2002 with service pack 3.

"Macrostuff" = Microsoft !

Macrostuff
 ;)
That's the same version of Windows I'm running and I can't reproduce the problem. The difference is I'm using a generic version of windows, not one bundled with a machine (with all of that extra 3rd party software installed).

Do you regularily run Windows updates?

Mine was OK until I allowed the above updates.
Since I have rebuilt it Ihave run NO updates

Yes, I use the automatic updates feature.

I don't run outlook though and it has caused problems for some people in combination with other software.

I don't run outlook either,  just outlook express.

Perhaps it is a Toshiba-ism.

Are you (or were) running backup exec?

Yes
Each night I run two routines to external (USB) disks
One use Windows NTbackup and backs up my Windows data
The other is a simple script that  backs up my (mapped) unix drives

I wonder if you are running into the "DLO" problem. It involves having backup exec and some current version of outlook (I'm not sure if express qualifies). It seems that the DLO option is blocking the connect somehow. Check this thread:

Thanks
I have read the thread but I don't think it is it.

To overcome my ignorance
a      When you refer to backup exec is this ntbackup?
and
b       What is DLO?

Sorry, I didn't parse you answer properly. You aren't using a third party backup solution so the problem doesn't apply to you.
