Changing UNIX flavour (new server)
« on: June 01, 2004, 09:13:30 am »

We are currently running icelpd on a UNIX server running Unixware 2.1.3
ice.lp runs on various Win PC's (ICE.TCP 4.3.1).
The new server's OS could be one of AIX,HP-UX,Solaris,LINUX.
Would any of them cause a serious problem.
What isssues should I be aware of in advance?
Thanks for any advice.

You would need to reconfigure the spoolers on whatever system you use.

This is different on each of the systems you mentioned. We have people using all of these systems however we have more users with Linux and AIX than Solaris and HP-UX. For any of non-linux systems you will need the Non-Intel host module for icelpd that you can get from us at an extra charge (call sales at 612-677-8200 for price info). Also you will need to configure the spooler and insert the icelp.scr script for each users printer. In linux with CUPS it's pretty straightforward. It's a little more difficult with AIX but there are instructions on our support website. Solaris uses a system similar to Unixware if it hasn't changed since I last used it. HP-UX is similar to Solaris in the printing system I believe.

I hope this gives you enough info to help out with your decision.

Thanks for the reply.
If the new server was non-linux would it be possible to buy the non-intel module, install it, use the existing printer scripts and run everything else as now?

Probably not quite that easy. The scripts are likely portable if you are going to another non-cups based system but the printers will still have to be setup using the systems add printer utilities.
