Connection Timeout
« on: May 09, 2007, 08:40:45 am »

I have 35 PCs running ICE.TCP Pro 5.1.  They are having problems with their terminal connections terminating after about 30 - 40 minutes.  Is this a setting in the software?  If so, I haven't been able to find the setting.  I contacted the company that we are connecting into and their server is configured to drop connections after 120 minutes, not 30 or 40.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer!

Here is an excerpt from another topic:

Pro 5.1.25 released

Changes from version 5.1.21

4.4 & 5.1 Expanding printing options to Normal/Raster/Direct
Raster printing provides support for many winprinters, this includes emulation of condensed printing via the standard line printer condensed print codes. Some tuning of the print width and height is available via special registry variables.

4.4 & 5.1  Added a KeepAlive option for telnet and SSH
(designed to keep DSL and PPP sessions alive. See VIEW->OPTIONS)

You will need to update your LicenseAdmin and users to the latest version of TCP Pro (currently 5.1.26) and set the KeepAlive option.

Thanks for the quick response.  How can I tell which version number I'm running?

See our Support Forum Topic:  Moving or updating the PRO license server

The above topics explains how to determine what version you are running, as well as how to update to the current version.

Ok, great.  One more question - I've looked through the manual and can't find information about the keep alive.  I've upgraded one of my PCs and found the setting.  I changed it to 60.  What does this mean?  Can you direct me to to the correct place in the manual?  Maybe I just missed it.

Thanks again,
David

Hi David,

The keepalive function was added after the manual printing so it's not in the manual.

To set it, you need to add or edit a registry entry (using regedit) at:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\J. River\ICE.TCP\5.0]

If there isn't a "KeepAlive" key, add it as a dword and set it's value to 1 (00000001).
Setting this value to 0 turns off KeepAlive.

JimN,

I made that change and now my test person is being disconnected after every minute.  Should I set it higher than "1"?

That's really strange. As far as I know, the setting is just an on off switch.
By all means, try it higher, see what happens.
If you still get disconnected every minute, my guess would be that the remote side is bulking at the keepalive signal Pro is sending, but I don't know why it should.

There is another support person who knows a lot more about telnet connections, he's off today, but should be back tomorrow (he checks the forums), you could wait to see if he has any ideas.

In versions 5.1.26 and newer you can set the keepalive switch in TelnetPro under view->options.

Bob,

Thanks for the response.

What should I set it to?  I changed it to "1" yesterday and my user kept getting thrown out of their telnet session.  Is that setting in minutes?

Thanks again,
David

1 means send a keepalive every 10 seconds. Are you using a telnet session or an ssh session?? It appears to me that you have a problem with a router or firewall box. Setting a keepalive should NOT kill a session!
