other than that, is there anything else we can do to fix this, the next step for me is to try to to reinstall windows XP and see if that fixes it

If the problem still occurs in the trialware, it could be that something needs to change in the current version.
If the trialware works, you would need to update your version.

I suppose reinstalling XP would work as long as you doing reinstall the HP driver.
If it's a common enough printer you might be able to just use the windows driver instead of installing the HP driver OR one thing I do often is just install the driver only portion of the HP software (there is usually a second download link for that on their site for your specific printer) and not the full blown HP software suite for the printer.
