I have a Dell inspiron 4100. Can I install a new modem? The current internal modem makes the phone line off the hook as soon as the phone line is plugged in.

That seems like weird behavior. I'm not familar with that model but if it is a desktop you should be able to add an external modem if you have a serial port on back.

Otherwise you could add an internal modem. The US Robotics modems seem to work well. See the modem information at the top of the forum about speedlocking a USR modem.
