Author Topic: Fixing problems when installing PRO over an version older than 5.0.81 on 2k/XP  (Read 5575 times)

This post is a condensation of other information already in this forum. It's reposted to be easy to find at the top of the forum list.

If you have tried to install a version older that 5.0.81 onto a Windows 2000 or XP machine you will likely have problems trying to get a sequence number. If you then try to install a version newer than 5.0.81 you will not be able to.

The problem is that the older versions of PRO predate Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The permissions on the registry became much more complex when Windows 2000 was introduced and the old installer knows nothing of this.

The result is that there will be registry entries created that are not writable even by the the user that was logged in when the install was run.

The solution is to delete those registry entries however that cannot be done until the permissions are changed to allow them to be deleted.

Note that this is for a CLIENT INSTALL ONLY. Don't delete the entries if this is a licenseadmin server, just change the permissions.

First, you must to be logged in as the user that tried to install PRO This is CRITICAL, only the original install user will be able to change the permissions. This means if you have a domain and you were logged into the domain, you need to do that again.

Second, run regedit, from the Windows start menu
start->run
type in regedit and hit enter. For Windows 2000 you need to do regedt32 instead.

Navigate into the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
 +SOFTWARE
then find the
       +J.River folder that is under SOFTWARE
For XP, right click on the J.River folder and select permissions. For Windows 2000 highlight (select) the J.River folder and do Security->Permissions from the pulldown in the top menu bar.

Next you will need to add the user that you are logged in as to the list and give that user FULL CONTROL permissions to the J.River folder AND it's subkeys.

In Windows 2000 do this by clicking on Add on the first dialog box and then selecting the login user from the list that shows up and click on Add button on that second dialog box then OK. You will now be back to the first dialog box with the login user added to the permissions list.
Select that login user and click on Full Control in the permissions box and click on Apply. Next click on the Advanced button. Make sure the login user is still highlighted. The bottom checkbox is "reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions". check that box and click Apply. Click Yes on the warning box that appears and click on OK when that is finished. Cancel out of the permissions dialog box, make sure that the J.River folder is still highlighted and do Edit->Delete from the pulldown in the top menu bar.

If you are using Windows XP do this by clicking on Add on the first dialog box and then type the login users name into the input box. This name COULD be Creator Owner or Administrator if there is no login screen when you bring up the machine. Click on OK. If you get an error here, the name you chose doesn't exist. Try again. If you were successful you will be back to the first dialog box. Highlight the user you just added and click on Full Control under the allow column. Click on Apply then click on Advanced. Make sure the login user is selected in the "permission entries" part of the dialog box. The bottom checkbox is "replace permissions on all child objects with the entries shown here that apply to the child objects". check that box and click Apply. Click Yes on the warning box that comes up. If you get an error here, make SURE you are logged in as the original PRO install user and try again. If you do not get an error, hit OK to exit back to the first dialog and then OK on the first dialog box to exit the permissions dialog. Make sure that the J.River folder is still highlighted, right click on it and select delete. Click on OK on the resulting warning box.

The J.River folder and all of it's subkeys should now be gone. If you get an error in the delete, make SURE you are logged in as the original install user and try the process again.

Once successful you can exit out of regedit (or regedt32) and rerun a network install of the new version of PRO. This time you will not run into trouble getting a sequence number.
