Good morning.

I use the ICE.OFFSITE 3.0.14 to dial to my client to perform my accounting tasks.

This used to work very well, when my office line system was Verizon - a land line, and my computer was an XP Pro SP2.

Now I use Vista Home Premium 64 and I use Bright House Networks - cable - for my office telephone system.  I run this in compatibility mode for XP Pro SP2. 

With the new provider, I now get strange symbols / garbage characters, on the screen, after being connected for a few moments / few minutes.

(I did try this same on the XP Pro computer, and get the same results)

My screen fills with the strange / gargage characters while the line is in use.

I use the Ansi 25 line and the 9600 and the 8 bits no parity.

Other speeds do not seem to make a difference, and the wyse 60 24 line did not work, and the 7 bits even parity did not work.

Any input will be appreciated.

Are you using the same modem as before? It sounds like the modem you are using is not going into error correcting mode when talking to your unix box.

Actually, this is a different modem card than before; this is a
CXT PCI soft data fax modem with Smart CP on COM3, an internal modem card.

In the software, I cannot see any settings about setting error correcting.

I am also trying the ICE.OFFSITE to XON/XOFF.

I wonder maybe trying the old internal modem card, with this new computer,
or trying an external modem, maybe worth the try.

It would be in the modem command set. One of the AT commands. It's pretty hard to tell what to use since they are only loosely based on an old hayes protocol. You could try ATI4 or AT&V and see if the modem replies.

I think that would be your best bet. If you can try the card that worked before it'd likely work again. Modems can be really picky about talking to each other. I bet the modem on the unix machine is pretty old as well...

Hi, Bob,

I tried the older computer with the older modem card, it did seem to last with a longer connection, perhaps 10 to 15 minutes, before the connection went down, with the strange symbols and characters.

I will next try the commands that you mentioned - ATI4 and AT&V

I have been using ATZ - that may have helped a little, but, I can't really prove it.

Hmmm, perhaps your unix modem is starting to die??
