Like many of us, I am really excited about this.
It looks like it is getting close. Look at what I found on the QNAP site:
When displaying content using HDMI outputs, you can use the TS-853A as an amazing multimedia player by using HD Station to enjoy rich apps including Kodi™, HD Player, Plex Home Theater, YouTube™, Spotify®, JRiver, Google Chrome™, Mozilla Firefox®, and more. Alternatively, you can choose to output the Ubuntu desktop to use the TS-853A as a PC.

It's not my model QNAP, but..... there is the JRiver name on a qnap page.

My limited experience of using the QNAP release on my TS-653 Pro (2GB Ram) has not been a good one  

I was being greeted with an interface that did not appear to support Theatre View.  Had it supported Theatre View this would have been my main reason to move over to the QNAP JRiver program.

I was not able to achieve smooth video, sort of reminded me of the old days when we had to put up with 50 Hz frame rates for 24 Hz frame rate films.  I tried all the usual parameters.

Since the QNAP JRiver 30 day trial will expire in the not too distant future I will probably never be able to trial it again.

Neither the Linux nor Mac versions MC support Theater View yet, it requires 3d support which is a work in progress on those platforms.
As for the video, there probably isn't enough horsepower to do 1080p video smoothly with the standard video access that we are doing. Hendrik might have more to say about this.
